17-Inch Flat CRT eMac Most Affordable G4 System Ever

CUPERTINO, Calif., June 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Due to strong consumer

demand, Apple(R) today announced the immediate availability of its new

eMac(TM) to consumers. Originally offered to just education customers, the

eMac was launched in April to rave reviews and has since generated tremendous

interest from consumers.

Apple is offering a new CD-RW and modem configuration eMac through all of

its retail channels. The eMac features a stunning 17-inch flat CRT and a

powerful 700 MHz PowerPC G4 processor in a remarkably compact design that is

"Consumers have pounded on the table demanding to buy the eMac, and we

agree," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "The eMac's production ramp is ahead of

schedule, so we'll have enough eMacs this quarter to satisfy both our

education and non-education customers."

All eMacs include Apple's award-winning suite of digital lifestyle

software including iPhoto(TM) for managing and sharing digital photographs,

iMovie(TM) 2 for creating digital movies, and iTunes(TM) 2 for creating a

digital music library. With five USB ports and two FireWire(R) ports, eMac

provides easy plug-and-play connections to popular peripherals such as digital

video camcorders, digital still cameras, printers and scanners.

MacsRGood4U, you were in the privileged position in which you could use "***CONFIRMED!!!***" without earning the contempt of almost everyone at AI! You missed your chance!

This is good news. Now, if Apple would ship a version with a SuperDrive...

    Belle,

No sense marching to the same old tired drummer! This is good news indeed and should give Apple a boost. Great price for what one gets.

The flat panel iMac MUST got to a 17" LCD now.

Looks like Apple is trying to clear excess eMac inventory, presumably due to slow sales in education.

iMac sales are also below expectations. I wouldn't expect a 17" LCD due to prohibitive costs.

um, no. y'see, the eMacs were only officially shipping as of the end of May... y'know, about a week ago. so there wasn't any backlogged inventory. just 10,000? emails in steve's account asking where they can buy a new eMac. Steve took 10,000, multiplied by the cost of an eMac, sh*t his pants, and made this announcement.

p.s. i guess this and quicktime 6 preview are the "announcements" that apple was going to make today. i dunno, the "e is for everyone"Mac seems pretty big to me.

? that's just my hypothetical estimate.

I don't know about 17" LCD, but I think definetly some iMac upgradage at MWNY. the iMac and eMac are a touch to similar for the iMac to be costing $300 more.

    slow sales?!?

where did you get that from?

emac has done very good (for the time it is available).

[quote]iMac sales are also below expectations.

    is that so?!?

i think it is the next logical step.

not everyone needs a dual 1.2ghz weapon with2gigs ram and a hand full of free pci and agb slots.

most of the consumers at home need a computer for wrighting letters and email, surfing the web, gaming, playing around with dv's, maybe building the families website and want something that blends in with the furniture at a good price.

...and stevie gave them just that.

One anaylst believed that LCD iMacs manufactured (not sales) were behind plans. The same day another anaylst said targets were pretty much where Apple said they would be on product delivery. People need to read and UNDERSTAND what is written and not misquote an article. LCD iMacs are selling as fast as they can be produced.

Education sales are just starting since delivery of the product in quantity is beginng this month.

It is true that all vendors are seeing a slowdown in K12 sales at the moment as school boards are cutting back on purchases. It is, however, still too soon to make any judgement on the eMac.

The typical Apple negativism still prevails around here from some. I'm waiting for the whinning about the consumer eMac not having this.. or having that. The more things change, the more they stay the same!

For years, I've seen post after post here at AI, and scores of webpages begging Apple to give us an iMac with a 17" and a G4 chip.

For some reason, Apple doesn't always like to follow the lead of its customers. The eMac turnaround is good news, and hopefully a sign the company is looking more to the kind of value it's customers want. (Let's sell millions of these through Walmart and Costco.)

Now if we could only get that PDA we've been asking for...

Let me say that I have no association with Frank here. But I can definitely say I agree with him.

Superdrive. Apple only charges $200 for it, though, so there must be some other nefarious purpose, here...

    Maybe the cool chrome swivel-thingy?

Maybe I'm missing something here, but it seems like the public version has a CD-RW and modem for only $50 more than the plain education version with only a CD and no modem(using individual prices, not institutional prices)? Shouldn't there be a bigger distance in price between the two (maybe the low-end education should be a little cheaper)?

    bryan,

Thanks. My prediction of whinning has begun. For your information the Think Secret article stressed that it was not going to be a big thing. Only people who misread or speculated thought so. Oh well, the beat goes on.
