A company valued at ~ $10.12Bil (with over 4Bil in cash and zero debt) snubbing a company valued at ~ 1.12B was a "big, big, stupid mistake"?
Well okay if you say so... but I still think Steve was right... (paraphrased) "Real brings nothing to the table for Apple". Heck, if Apple wanted to they could probably even initiate a hostile takeover of Real and still have a pretty good chunk of change in their cash reserve. But at this stage of the game what would be the point? I could be wrong but Real just doesn't have the industry pull that it once did and in another few years or so it wouldn't shock me to see Real fall off the radar screen entirely. Microsoft has been slowly eating their lunch and if Real does make a deal with them then my 'another few years' prediction might even need to be reevaluated...
In short - Real is in real trouble and grasping for straws... I see no point in Apple providing them one.
Dave
My belief is that Real has product recognition and pull in the Wintel world. We may think as Steve Jobs does, that iTunes will keep kicking butt on WMP, but I don't see that as a forgone conclusion.
What is the problem with letting iPods play with another website??!?!? Apple makes money on the iPod, not the website. So what if people download songs from the Real site or use Real software...that is just more people buying iPods and getting to know Apple in another way.
If that means Real stays alive awhile longer....so what, that's a good thing....keeps M$ running a two-front war.
The only downside I see is that I guess if someone bought an HPpod and used Real software, they could get the idea that Apple has nothing to do with it, but it is in Apple's interest for HP to be successful.
And don't buy Real....partner and bundle and get more iPods out to those who are the timid or poor late adopters.
I just see no real downside to a limited partnership with Real.
Come on, the thought is "Real brings nothing to the table". The proposal was, Apple licenses Fairplay to Real so Real can build and sell iTMS-clone online music stores. It's easy to see what Real gets out of it. What does Apple get out of it? (pause for thought) Well, that's what Steve apparently thought, too.
The mockup above is probably about right, except for the screen resolution. I wonder if the price will come down? I wonder if it'll have microphone or line in jacks? More organizer features?
Yeah, Real gets a whole few cents per song to run hundreds of servers....so what. Apple makes money as a hardware provider, a software provider .... not a content provider. It is nice to get people to go to the Apple site and see the Apple store, but in a year anyone who wants and iPod will have gotten one...then they'll look for something else.

Exactly. It's a huge gamble. I hope Real comes back begging with an even better offer and Apple takes it. Cuz M$ is going to crush iTMS more than likely. 80 billion hell I bet M$ themselves will come out with a PDA or iPod clone, sell it for 4x less than the iPod, lose a ton of money on it, crush Apple iPod marketshare to 5% then jack up prices. It's what they've always done and will do until either we elect John Kerry and/or (because I doubt that will do anything, Dems are just as lobbied) a miracle happens..

Bush is a Mac user, and just to be perfectly frank with you, there have been more M$ fines and penalties handed out during the Bush administration than during the Clinton era.
The Real deal isn't that important because about half of the iPods sold are sold to Windows users. Apple has a very strong following in that camp and I don't see then buying an iPod copy from Real or MS after using an iPod. There is no doubt in my mind that either will be able to come up with the same "cool" design unless it is a direct copy - just look at what MS has done with XP: about as cool as a Kia.

that;s why Apple have to keep on upgrading the iPod, make people upgrade, it's a fashion accessory to most remember, al they have to do is make sure that they bring out a new one every year, which is a noticeable improvement, not just a case design and a dock like last time.

....because of litigation DURING the Clinton administration. Bush even used it in during his 2000 campaign that he would stop the DOJ attack on Microsoft. It's called history...check it out.
Ok, so back on topic....no new iPods. Messiahtosh, you really are just winging it
Anywho, I guess the iPod really won't be touched for a while, since the iPod minis haven't been shipping for long, and there really is no compelling reason for a vPod, per Steve. So I guess we are now stuck in a holding pattern until late June (WWDC). So please, no more silly FH threads, ok? BTW, I see the key and the knob, now just insert and twist....

When? I've got no memory of that, nor can I find any record of it. Are you sure you're not referring to a price-drop?
