And if you hit someone, pod, well, I guess that's just too damn bad for them, huh?
Streetracers are selfish trash.
Sounds like you've been beat a few times
As I said, I don't street race anymore (I haven't for > 10 years). I can beat those fart pipe kids from stoplight to stoplight without every going over 40mph. Its all legal
You have a 944? (I couldn;'t really tell from the pic. . . but it's definitely a porsche with the 3.0L 4cyl. . . maybe a 958 or 968.) That's a nice car, but it's not really lightning quick.
Yep. A 1988 Porsche 944, 2.5L Turbo. It has over 176,000 miles on it and has rarely given me problems. I'm going to have it re-painted in a few weeks.
I can't be "beat" at something I'm too moral of a person to do.
Unlike street racing filth, I care about other people, and would never risk killing an innocent person in order to have "fun."
There is nothing immoral about driving fast. If you can't handle the possible consequences, then it's good that you don't do it. But trying to make it a moral argument just makes you sound like an asshole, and a stupid one at that.
Driving faster than the speed limit ? and specifically racing down public streets ? is a danger to people who might be around. Someone might step into the street, someone might stumble into the street, someone might be pulling out of a parking lot, spot or driveway.
But of course, you don't give a damn about those people, do yo, Spline? You don't give a damn about anyone who's not just like you, that much is clear from your posts here.
You race because you're a selfish jerk who doesn't care that his thrillride could kill someone else. I hope when it happen that that someone is a person you know. I hope it makes you miserable for the rest of your life.

There are many things that are dangerous. Driving at the speed limit is perfectly dangerous. It's just an arbitrary advisory set up by a government that's out of date. My car can stop from 120-0 faster than most can from 50-0. But that's all moot. The big deal is that "someone" isn't going to "stumble out" into the middle of the interstate at night. Your lack of knowledge on the subject really shows. All street races I'm aware of are done on major highways, closed roads, or in the Mexican desert if you're interested in going really fast.
As for me caring about other people, I actually care quite a bit personally, I just don't think it should be a law to care. I'd even probably make the effort to push a perenial loser like yourself away from a car that would have otherwise hit you. But I don't think that kind of action should be law.
All street races I'm aware of are done on major highways, closed roads, or in the Mexican desert if you're interested in going really fast.
Here in chicago I've seen people do it in populated areas. Other folks, and a few friends of mine, play dangerous driving games not just late at night on 94, but on empty side streets. I know one guy that has gotten into at least one accident a year for the past few years, but still keeps up with it.
However, my understanding is that the vast majority of injuries and deaths due to street racing are usually just confined to the participants in the race. I think as long as people aren't totally stupid about it then it's their own decision.
Has anyone noticed if Neø and Murbot in the same room at the same time? I think not! Take off that mask.
Look assmunch, take that BACK.
I haven't read the rest of the thread yet, but this post made me chime in. murbot just doesn't have a Mac at home, and he's busy at work during the days now.... I'll be back to my regular old self once my new PowerBook and eMac get here.

Not as dangerous as speeding. Other people on the roads expect the traffic to be going within a certain range of the speed limit. They take precautions accordingly.

They certainly might. Deserts aren't necessarily empty. You're still taking a chance with other people's lives, and that is never acceptable.

And what if someone's out in that desert? What if someone's lost and pulls onto your major highway when you're racing like a maniac?
You have no business racing on city streets. People have a right to expect those roads to be safe for them to drive on, regardless of the hour of night. You have no right to race on them. You endager the general public, and I hope you pay the price for your arrogance.
Life in a wheelchair is too good for scum who race on public roadways.

There's no law that says you have to care. But there is a law that says you can't race on public roads.
What right do you have to intentionally race so fast on publicly-accessible roads that someone else may be using for legitimate purposes?

Oh. Ouch. You called me a "loser." Gee, that hurts. What, precisely, am I losing?

No, but it is the law that you do no tdo things with could egregiously endanger other people.
There's nothing wrong with driving fast, provided its in an appropriate place, with an appropriately designed vehicle which is safe at speed. Its fun on a desert freeway like the i-40 at 3 am when there aren't any cars for miles in each direction, or on a racetrack. But street racing in an urban area is plain "asshole-ism", just as Kirkland pointed out. Old or blind people, or young children could be crossing the street, etc etc. Someone's child or pet may rush into the street without warning from behind a parked car or bus.....if you are a parent, put yourself in the position of hearing the tires screeching in the street outside your livingroom window, the crash of metal and the screams of your seriously, or fatally, injured child. I am quite 'libertarian' in many respects...I dont appreciate being "nannied" by authorities...but the laws against street racing are there for very good purpose and should be enforced to the fullest extent. Hurt someone being an asshole: go to jail for a long time.
And....it isn't so much the skills (or lack of them) of the person doing the racing that is the danger: it's the skills (or lack of them) of other road users that are not allowed for. 16 year old kids here in California can get a license and with minimal driving ability or experience. And it's 16-24 year old boys/men, with testosterone flowing in abundance who are attracted to street-racing. Is it to try and impress girls? If so, try something else...,loud noisy engines sound just like their owners...loud, noisy, boorish and often stupid.

Hmmm... At first glance, that would suck. But it raises the question: What the hell are the parents doing in the living room when their chile is playing in the front yard? But that is a whole different rant I will save for another time.
Growing up, I had a huge back yard with a creek. (I still love that house) I was not allowed to play in the front yard. My parents kept all my toys in the back anyways. When I was in the front yard, it was with constant supervision even though I knew to stay out of the street. The only time I have ever been close to hit by a car was when I rode my bike into a parked one.
Don't get me wrong "Neo" I used to hang out at a Sunoco station in my teens. The guy on the right there was the owner's son. He'd always had his friends hang out there at night. A a lot of cool muscle, custom and illegal cars from all over. The dude on the right was a friend, musician and mechanic. They had a band called "Flower Power".
Really. They used to jam down at the station at night. And yes, they'd race. On the roadway in the background.

Me and my partner Sonny built her straight out of scratch and he rides with me from town to town. We only run for the money, got no strings attached.
We shut 'em up and then we shut 'em down.
