My college has 2 rows of parking spaces facing each other with no separators. I usually park head-first into a spot but today I drove through and parked in the far side. (Does this make sense?) My car was centered almost perfectly on the first try. (If was a few inches closer on the left). I started to pack my iPod in my bag, and this car starts to enter in the open spot next to mine. It starts to turn in, quickly turns out (seeing me) drives past a few feet, sticks it in reverse, and takes a total of 5 tries to get the car pointed straight.
PLEEEESE don't hit my car!
Backing into a spot is a skill that's strengthened by frequent use. I must admit, I don't use it much. Perhaps if that skill were included on drivers tests there would be less risk.
Parallel parking is also uncommon in everyday-driving situations so it has not become second nature to me, but I can do it if I concentrate.
Maybe I had a good driving instructor but I never had trouble backing a car into anything. He had a great method of teaching parallel parking. I used to drive an old Cadillac too, 19.5 feet long.

In MN in the winter, with an old car, you planned for things like maybe needing a jump-start.
In my car, the battery is under the passenger seat.
