Oh, ToySight is a kickass technology, no doubt about it. Heck, I was stunned that no one had done this before us *at all*. I mean, it wasn't exactly an earth-shattering idea, and I thought it was kind of obvious, but... *shrug*
Anyway, it's fun.
back on topic - yes toysight is incredible smart. thanks for the link.
Wow, Kickaha, that's one brilliant piece of work! First, holy great use of Quartz, batman! More generally, great use of all the underlying goodness of OSX. Apple is supposed to be all about giving people the tools to exercise their creativity with no bounds. Your work is a poster-child for that. And second, your solution to the tracking problem is just simply elegant. Reading your explanation, it's a stupendously obvious idea, and it's clearly much easier to use and much simpler to implement than any previous solution. It boggles the mind how no one thought of doing the mirror-image thing before. The sign of genius. You, sir, are a true Kary Mullis.
I have PM'd you some particulars. I have a very serious inquiry for you. Please get back to me ASAP. I am waiting to email Jim until I hear from you, thanks!
Kickaha, this works with an iSight, right? I know you said any firewire camera, but I read somewhere that the iSight doesn't give standard video output or some such thing.

As far as I know, it gives standard DV output - the 'magic' happens in the auto-focus/color balance, etc, etc, etc. You may be thinking of the fact that what you get is not the raw DV, but massaged data.

That's just it. It has been done ? just not "publicly".
I've been told of something similar, but it doesn't require the use of a thimble. I'm not sure how it works, but it does exist, and no, I haven't seen it although I know it was someone's Honours, Masters, or PhD project...
Kick, we're mighty proud. Doubtless that you're gonna get Farked by somebody realllly soon. Buy some nice duds, get your teeth cleaned and your hair done.

Sorry I can't be more specific... m.
*laugh* S'alright, I had to keep mum about this for months, and it drove me nuts.
The slickest one I've seen used a ring you wore on your finger, like any other. It had a tiny RF transmitter in it that tracked the position and orientation of your finger based off of an array of receivers around the workspace. It allowed you to be typing simply lift your finger off the keyboard an inch or so and point up at the monitor. You didn't need to lift your arm, but you also didn't have any positional feedback, so it was a bit difficult to learn for some. The hardware also cost about 6k$. \ Neat, but pricey.
We have some neat improvements to it that are in the pipeline as well... I'll be able to talk about those when they're appropriately protected. *sigh*
Very similar to a project I worked on. I?ll have to see if you are possibly infringing on my patents. I can?t say much about this. It?s top secret. Let?s just say it has something to do with porn and a red condom.

Still, the current system you have in place does indeed look cool, and I want one.
Have you tried using 2 iSight cameras and mapping corresponding points in 3D, to potentially alleviate the need for the thimble?
Also, this sort of technology would be good for those obsessive compulsive people who don't like touching the buttons on ATMs... m.

The thimble was still needed, but we did it to experiment with clicking actions. Was fun, but bogged down the CPU a tad. We found other ways of dealing with it instead. But yeah, two cameras is a piece of cake.

Actually, we've already had commercial interest in kiosks...
Want to see something scary about how a meme can propagate?
Google for 'facetop'.
Cool, but scary.
If anyone's bored by this, let me know... this is my first brush with this sort of thing, so it's kind of neat in a personal way.

What's the killer app for this idea?
OH!!
And when you're interviewed for WIRED can you drop in a "Confirmed" somewhere in there? A little shout-out to you AI buddies?
