It wouldn't be impossibe to bring out a PDA for Apple. The main prohibitive issues are 3 things. (1) Price compared to the competitors. (2) Jobs' promise that they would be a one OS company unlike their competition. (3) Due to using a full OS you end up jamming alot of unnecessary software onto a larger than needed drive to give very little usefullness/value to the consumer unless the consumer plugs into a full keyboard or a full size screen.
If Apple has already done the R&D for the device then the only costs are associated with manufacture and marketing. I can understand that Apple may not make lots of money on a pda, but it won't lose money either if the R&D are already done.
Any pda that even looks like an ipod will sell enough to make up for the marketing.
That said I'll be fine upgrading my old Visor to a Treo or something else later, but Apple won't get any of that money.
Okay, so maybe there is no more need to speculate on an Apple pda for the next decade....I still think or hope that Apple is working on a pocket Mac in some form. Below is the latest from Fujitzu and Seimens
What this sez to me is that the technology will keep getting there whether Apple does it or not AND that partnerships are the shape of things to come.
It wouldn't cost Apple too much to actually work with a partner to develop a linux based pocket pc and help with some of the systems integration while the other partner did the leg work on the processor and such. Maybe working with HP or another company that is more open to life beyond Redmond would be a good idea.
