hmm...to further save space we could drop the display and plug it into a jack in the users head then we could eliminate memory and hard drive by partitioning a section of the user's brain...

I'm not saying to be constricted to wireless. I'm saying that Apple could include a base station such as Airport express that you can take anywhere and have wireless anywhere. You people just have to think outside the box.

"Outside the box" many of those extra devices and dongles needed just to make the thing work get damaged and lost. That does not seem the Apple way.

ps - wouldn't a dock connector take as much space as an ethernet port? The ones I've seen certainly do.

Ok well it was just an idea. We don't have to get so defensive.

I assume the device would still have USB (and maybe bluetooth.) Alternatively, Apple could produce a small 802.11g WAP with an in-built modem, something no bigger than a miniPod. It'd almost certainly sell outside of the Apple market too, I know people with phone jacks on one side of the house and computers on the other who'd buy a sub-$100 device like this in an instant.

I think this can be made to work. As long as it's small it doesn't matter that it's a seperate box, as anyone planning on using it is going to need to going to expect to be pulling it out of a bag or something anyway.

I'd still want a device I can play DVDs on though (without lugging around an additional box.) If it wasn't for that evil CSS system, a simple "Rip and copy to laptop" system could be created, but I guess that'd have a bunch of legal issues right now.

I apologize if I seem defensive (and sarcastic in some cases). I have dealt with a number of portable devices at work and with the military and most of the solutions do not work as advertised or just aren't worth the effort. I especially hate with a passion tablet devices now after dealing with them extensively.

On the other hand a subnotebook with as many ports and even internal drives in some cases are possible and work. The only real problem will be the market size for the device. In the US there just does not exist a sufficient demand for them like there is for those suitcase sized nightmares you see at Bestbuy and CompUSA.

The x505 is the best example of a sub-notebook. It is actually missing internal wireless though, you have to insert a pc card which is included but not built in. But 1.7 lbs. That's next to nothing. For Apple to make a really light notebook, they would definitely have to use carbon fiber.

That was my point though. Many neat items are sold on Dynamism's site which are unavailable here in the US.

I checked SonyStyle though and it seems you *can* get this one here too.

ps - holy crap that's a lot of money. $2999 with no optical drive...

The x505 is now available for order in the US. Check out Sony's website. But I do agree that the market for sub-notebooks is small, since most people don't want to sacrifice an optical drive and some of the ports for portability. However, I believe that if someone can get a sub-notebook right, it's Apple.

At the price Sony is asking it seems to scream executive toy. It does seem to be what you're asking for though.

Well, I guess portability comes at a price, although I do think that some companies think they're selling gold bricks. It can't be that much of a price difference to produce a full featured notebook to a sub-notebook that's missing half the features. I think it's just a marketing trick.

Part of that cost may be that they must recoup their investment over fewer units sold.

yeah, it's that old conundrum -paying more for less. There's R&D costs, but I'm sure Apple have been R&D'ing something similar already. I'd love to take a snoop round their testing dept.

That would be nice to see some of the ideas Apple has come up with that have never made it to the market. I bet you there's a lot of interesting stuff.

My biggest concern with a sub-12 portable would have to be related to keyboard size. Place your finger on your keyboard's keys and look. They're not that big, ya know? If they shrink them you'll end up getting hand cramps and typos.

since I'm not planning on writing a novel that doesn't really concern me. I just want to have access to my stuff while I'm traveling without a brick in my bag.

4.6 pounds is hardly a brick. Have you actually SEEN those 12-inch PBs? They're small. Extremely portable. Very light.

Not small enough to be considered a true sub-notebook. Normally, a sub-notebook is 3 lbs or less.
