I don't think we'll see the iMac unveiled at Paris.
Any particular reason why? I think it's perfect timing for an iMac that is to make it's debut in September, and it's the next opportunity for his Steveness to address a large gathering of the Faithful...
...The most interesting comment to date is the one about using the same mother board in the iMac as they have planned for the G5 PB. That one definitely caught my eye.
Not the first time I proposed that as a logical move for Apple to spread the R&D costs for the new iMac into a higher profit product. Many of the engineering obstacles are the same or very similar.
The integrated graphics from the current AL books should be all the iMac needs, but lets just hope they keep the DVI port.
Nothing! Paris is in Europe, Europe is not USA, Europe is only a cash-cow, cash-cows don't need attention => Paris does not need any attention (Apple-wise).

If its a redesign i dont see apple unveiling it overseas. The American press does not cover AppleExpo Paris and Apple would benefit more from unveiling it in the states at a special event that the press is invited to and that is broadcast to Apple Stores at a reasonable hour of the day.
september is when the new spring lines get previewed. When all of the fashion press is attending the fashion shows. Get a little creative marketing by the new gal from Ralph Lauren who just joined up at apple. That's a good strategy. She has the fashion contacts and they are at the same place as the fashion shows at the same time.
Thus, the imac gets covered in the fashion mags and those mags get read by people willing to pay more for something that looks nice. If apple is to target the living room these are the people that must be swayed first. I would also speculate that there might be more ad $ spent on those mags by apple. I don't believe that any computer company targets that audience directly.
Didn't lagerfeld make a bag for his 20 ipods for fendi?

apple already has the geek sector the fashion sector is next.
i think apple is fairly prevalent in the fashion industry already.
and your post, implies that the iMac will cost more due to looks than other competition. i would hope this would prove wrong and that design is not the first priority but price/performance is. the iMac LCD was about design and it failed. APple can't make the same mistake twice

I wouldn't say the iMac LCD was a failure ? the Cube was a failure.
The iMac G4 did well initially, then petered out up to this point. For memory, the first month it came out they had 150,000 orders or something.

Meh... m.
It failed because it had no legs to grow. Not because of it's design. Look at how often macs are on TV or in the movies. They are selected by set designers who want to put a cool looking thing in the shot. Not some big ugly box but something elegant. Now if the design is good this will leverage into product placement shots in all sorts of films and TV shows. If you travel around to the high end furniture stores in Manhattan they have plastic mock ups of the imac on top of the desks and such. The interior designers are cognisant of the beauty of the imac. The imac's trouble is that it was an underperformer. Kind of like a bad date, nice to look at but the conversation was less than stimulating.
Make the damn thing work and scream and look good. Looking good is important for apple's corporate philosophy. Look at all of the great work being produced on macs. Video, audio, web design, etc. Who do you think produces all that great stuff, artists. With a keen appreciation for the design.
Yes I know starving artists and such, but apple simply does not have the economies of scale of the other compaines. They produce the market. Windows made all it's money on the OS and office. Apple has to produce an os, and the platform to run it on. All the while keeping the corporate spies away from it's intellectual property. The reason windows was such a success is that it was a patent rip off of the apple gui.
rant over.
Give us a nice design at a reasonable cost with good performance.
(2) new AIO iMac - Al form - using new 15", 17" panel (with VESA mount) and existing 20" panel with VESA mount, G5 processor (at 1.6 and 1.8ghz). Pricing $899, $1,499 and $1,899.
(3) new headless iMac - same processor (1.6 and 1.8ghz G5), a bit more flexibility on expansion, Al form with box costing $699 and $899. If you add a 17" or 20" flat panel, total cost becomes $1,399 and $1,998 for the entry level $699 machine and $1,599 and $2,199 for the "high level" $899 machine. This provides flexibility for consumers, a university machine and entry into the enterprise market. If you don't add the Apple flat panel, you have a very cheap entry for switchers and enterprise users.
It's ok to make the looks on the iMac awesome, as long as it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to pay for those looks. If a consumer has to pay for the looks the idea of the iMac has been defeated.

All of that sounds great! I would hold off on the EOL of the eMac though, just a bit longer.....give it 2 months, then hack the sucker.
I think those who are in it for asthetics will be disappointed this go-round.
I don't think so. The PowerBooks and PowerMacs certainly address the needs of "those who are in it for aesthetics" and I expect the iMac to evolve along similar lines. I think Apple is finally realizing the form/function relationship in their products.
While the iMac 3 will be more utilitarian, a more minimal form is the only natural aesthetic solution. The alternative is more ornamentation. Can you say "Flower Power?"

What do you expect to see at Paris?

Valid: especially for old-Europe.

Just my opinion.
Paris is perfect for the mac!
perfect place to unveil the apple imac.

yes, he did and it is all the rage in fashion:

Apple needs to grow up and act like a truly international company.
Doesn't matter where the iMac 3G is launched, it will be BIG news.
I'd also like to hear news of the 975 based PowerMac running at 3 gig. Even if it starts life above the current PowerMac price bracket?
Quad workstation line might be nice. We can expect a re-run of 'Tiger'?
I think it all points to iMac 3G and showing off the 'new' PowerMacs/alu monitors and stores/ipod/itunes euro launch/success...
Possible iPod 60 gig launch?
