Not true. I just see far beyond you, and a color screen. It's extremely useless, and counterproductive today, and probably will be tomorrow. There is no need to add color just to do the things your talking about (accept a the visualizer on an iPod which is your brilliance alone shining through) The main point is to keep costs down, battery life up, and sound quality superb. All the other junk is just gravy. A color screen would bring cost up, battery life down, and a visualizer on an iPod. Are you joking. You must be. I just think your talking out of your @ss with that suggestion. Do you have any idea how taxing that would be on the system. Your talking about 10 - 30 minutes of battery life. Yeah. I really want one of those things now. I'm just saying that with an iPod that is supposedly being released in a few days there is no technology that is affordable enough to add the junk your talking about + keep the cost down, and the battery life up. Today these things need to be a cheap as possible. US economy is in a crisis for the middle class, and the poor FYI.
Maybe the scroll wheel is internally illuminated, explaining the greyish color? Think of the potential: iPod as night-light in the nursery; 1970s-era "color organ" software to flash in rhythm with the music; MP3 player and roadside emergency beacon; illuminated calendar alarms...
Shut up people and buy the damn thing! It may be one of the most perfect high tech devices released in the early part of the 21st Century. Tomorrow the surprises will surface as to specs and pricing. The only thing is that Steve looks like a used car salesman on the cover. I don't know if i'd buy anything from him with that look.
The scroll wheel does have some illumination for the button icons, but I think it's aluminum like the iPod mini's. Assuming it's pretty much the same, the pic doesn't do it justice.
I can imagine Job's thinking when he fins out the secret is out:
"Time magazine? Bozos!"
"Newsweek? Bozos!"
"Maybe U.S. News can keep a secret?"
Steve: avoid the magazine exclusive if you want to keep a secret. Go for the cover story one week after your announcement!
[edit 1]
Well, there's one change that's apparent: "shuffle songs" can now be placed at the top level! I wonder if equalizers can be too?
[edit 2]
Oh, and playlists and browse are collected under "Music" at the top level, which suggests more room for other things?
[edit 3]
The iPod there doesn't look much smaller in terms of width and height then the current iPod, just the that scroll wheel isn't as precariously close to the bottom edge of the thing.
It's really impossible to keep a weekly magazine from changing its policy concerning covers. Steve knows that. There's really nothing to be pissed about. Apple didn't plan any major special event so what difference does it make. Perhaps they'll upgrade the website tomorrow. Still, we don't yet have any of the details as the website still does not have the new issue cover up on the home page yet. Tomorrow.
Well, there were rumors that the cover of Mad Magazine would contain the new iPod, but Steve objected to looking like Alfred E. so he gave the story to Newsweek.

I think you're so full of cr@p cos you just invented that a visualizer would tax the system 10 to 30 minutes of battery life. I'm telling you three things:
1. Apple hasn't done swat to improve battery life. The older iPods (the bulkier 1st and 2nd gen) actually had better battery life. I can speak from experience because I owned a 2nd gen and currently own a 3rd. Battery life has gotten worse. Apple even advertised the first and second gen as "10 hour battery" and the 3rd is advertised as "8 hour battery." And actually lasts 6 or 7, but YMMV
2. There are companies that for prices comparable to the high end iPod give you a HD based device that plays MP3s, plays video, record off the TV, and shows your pics (on the go slideshows, digital pic wallet, whatever) so the technology is there. It's not elegantly done, like Apple could do it, but it's out there. (Check the RCA Lyra or the Archos AV 320)
3. Just because you can't afford it doesn't mean it is a bad idea. Or that the technology "isn't there yet."
1. Apple hasn't done swat to improve battery life.
I think you mean "squat". Apple says "Up to...." in all their advertising concerning battery life. Competitors do the same. If battery life is that bothersome to you, well, you need to consider a Dell or the upcoming Sony. I'm sure they'll be just as good as the iPod, as easy to use, etc. Enjoy the iPod for what it is and not what you want it to be. You'll have a better life experience that way. It's selling better then anything else. People like it!
Steve: avoid the magazine exclusive if you want to keep a secret. Go for the cover story one week after your announcement!
Oh, he knew this would happen. But there's still all kinds of stuff that that cover photo doesn't tell you.

They've definitely streamlined the interface. This is absolutely a good thing. The current interface leaves at least one top level menu item on the mini off the bottom of the screen, and it's altogether too easy to forget that it's there at all.
Moving "shuffle" up to the top level was a stroke of genius, too. I hope this is generally available as a firmware update.

Comparing that image to my own iPod, and thinking ahead to what are almost certainly higher capacity hard drives, I'd be surprised if there's much of any difference in size or weight. The current iPods feel entirely satisfactory to me.
The mini's scroll wheel is an unambiguous improvement in all respects. If it's literally the mini's scroll wheel, that'll bring the cost down; but I'm not sure of that from the photo.
At any rate, based only on the photo, it looks like a good update.

Yeah, I mean squat. Sorry, Spanish is my native language.
I don't bitch about it, I never listen to my iPod for very long periods of time, but I was just stating that Apple isn't into extending the battery life of the device. By making it slimmer, they're sacrificing battery life. That's a fact. I've seen it myself with my iPods.
I was hoping for a "bigger mini". The wrap around anondized aluminum look. I just think its a cleaner/stronger design. Instead we are still gonna have to live with the white plastic and the smudgy finger print covered back.
Wash your hands more often. It's good for you and will ensure that the peanut butter and jelly doesn't smudge the iPod.
Of course you can buy any number of cases... well, the new ones probably won't be available for a month or so.
The Mac Observer reports tonight that the iPod will be offiicially unveiled on Monday. They claim they have a copy of Newsweek and will post additional info on Sunday at noon EDT. Oh yes, it is thinner then the current version.
The new ipod looks alright. I was expecting more, but whoever said this before was right don't mess with success. I just hope that apple has not made the sizes redicliously large (25G, 40G, 60G) or something like that to keep prices up because not only does that leave a gap in the product line up (HP-pod?) but it annoys people like me who have the 15G and thats way more than i ever will need, I currently have 5.7G of music and wish they had made a 10g for me because I cannot forsee my music collection growing past 10G. Also just because we have a picture does not preclude some special features (either optional or in the high capacity models or standard [apple has done wierder stuff]) like airtunes intigration, open programming for the firmware, or who knows apple can always suprise us!
The date on the cover says the 26th of July, as we all know, it's not quite that yet. Finding somthing on the web like this this early before the announcement reminds me of the G5 incident.

FACTS:
Screen is higher-res version like the mini but with the same size as the existing iPods.
Interface (buttons) are exactly like mini.
Slightly smaller form-factor
New backlight.
Menu is much different. Why start with Music unless there is something else?!
GUESSES
Scroll wheel is available in colors (including grey/silver as shown).
Sizes up to 60GB
New functions, video out.
Home on iPod
Longer battery life (14 hours)
That's my prediction, and I'm sticking to it.

and you'd stare at them continuously to make it worth it im sure
