You don't put a 1.8" drive in a subnotebook. A 2.5" drive would be a better choice plus I'm guessing that a 100GB 2.5" is similar in price to a 60GB 1.8".
If Apple is using the 60GB mini drive it is going into a small portable device.
Remember, these 1.8" drives were never meant for heavy use, and as such, would not be appropriate as a system drive.
...
Why not? According to Toshiba's site they are suitable for use in laptops. I couldn't find any specs for expected use per month. Perhaps they now have better specs than they did at introduction?
They spec the MTTF at 300,000 hours. They also state that the expected lifetime is 5 years or 20,000 hours ON time. That is 4,000 hours a year or about ten hours a day. That is fairly heavy use. Much more than you would expect from a typical sub-notebook.

1. they are extremely slow
2. they will burn out (hence why Apple does not support booting off of them)
On a different note: "Apple claims immediate availability of the new iPod, and Hewlett-Packard has confirmed that its HP-branded version of the iPod will be based upon the fourth-generation design, and available in September."
Obviously, Apple is sitting on the 60 GB model because HP will introduce HPods with the current capacity of the Apple iPods. My bet is that Apple will let HP make its Pod announcement, then Apple will unveil the 60 GB as their very own, high end iPod.
Apple will have the mini and the 60 GB exclusively, HP will get the 20 and 40 GB model. That's what I think.
I agree.
I naively thought 20 GB was too much for a music collection, but I got to 15gb ALOT faster than I thought I would and that doesn't leave much harddrive space. So 60 GB for music is alot, but not for music and lots of files. I would travel wth an iPod with music photos and work backed up on it and be able to boot occasionally to a pc if I need to edit anything. 60 GB would be perfect for that.
I would also like to see the iMac become the preferred "accessory" to the iPod. I think Apple should build a cradle right into the new iMac (remember the "no cords" days). iPod'ers would then buy the computer that best serves their needs...but as the iPod takes up more of their life they will need it to go beyond 40 GB.
It is amazing to me that the 40GB iPod has the same capacity as my PowerBook!!!
Maybe the 60 GB iPod will be ready just in time for iSync 1.5 with the 'Home on iPod' synching sorted? I hate not being able to carry my core 'Home' files around with me.
Even better if it will help me sync, via my iPod, with my works wintel laptop...
A new range of coloured iPods. White. Alu. Blue. Pink.
iMovie. iPhoto. iCal. Quicktime 7 trailers. iSynic. Wireless Airport Express utility. Stream video and audio from Mac to iPod. Digital wallet.
I don't mind watching video on a small screen.
(It's available in phones now. You can capture clip. Capture photos. Phones are natural audio devices. How long before iPhone/Quicktime software drives phones and Apple becomes a 'phone' maker by proxy..? In short, an Apple DLD offering all of the above is behind the curve. But no phone is really 'there' yet in the way Apple is 'there' with music re: the iPod. When Apple enters the video DVD market...wait for the ruptions...)
iPod Maxi range adopts PDA ultility, tech'/roles.
As iPods get bigger hard drives. This is the direction.
That's a glimpse of the future. Apple's in. PDAs out.
How long before Apple delivers 'THE' killer portable device? Anybody who thinks the iPod was a one-off can look at the join press release with the Moto and think again. Apple are serious about iPod/iTunes in a way they were never serious with the Mac market. Hell is freeqing over... I think the Moto press release is the most significant intention of the 'new' Apple and where they're going. They may have lost the 'OS' marketshare battle...but they haven't lost the war.
!
iPod Maxi. (I think the iPod market can support 3 tiers. 'Mini', 'Medi', 'Maxi'.)

the 20Gb is single platter. 40GB is double with 20GB per platter. new 60GB is double with 30GB per platter.

I agree. Maybe Apple is getting ready to compete in the sub-notebook market. That would be nice.
TOSHIBA REP: But Steve, you must pay us for the drives.
STEVE: You idiots cannot keep a lid on anything. You can kiss my *ss!
TOSHIBA REP: So what are you going to do for your new iPod then, Steve?
STEVE: Buy more Hitachi 40G drives, that's what we'll do. Drop the price a hundred bucks or so and stick you in the rear.
TOSHIBA REP: {silence}.......uhhhhh.........

The 60 GB drive means videoPod.
Syncronicity.
iPod 60 gig should mean iPod 'Maxi'.
