Does this mean no color screen iPod in September?
Well, does it? I had read the story on AI that the iPod could get bigger hard drives, color screen, blah blah blah. But then these updated ones come out, so would this mean this is IT for now with the iPod line? It would seem as if it would be too soon to update the iPod again with color and bigger hard drives in 2 months after what was just released a few days ago. What do you all think?

Anyways, as apple advertises "iPod Remixed" I kind of take this as more of a 3.5g and maybe within the next 8 months we will see a more drastic overhaul

Please try to understand that you are excited about something you would not be excited about IF you actually had it...
Your a victim of HYPE
Here's why:
You open your iPod, scroll, choose: I still haven't found what I'm looking for by U2, "man it sounds great" you think
You open your iPod, scroll, choose: I still haven't found what I'm looking for by U2 BUT NOW YOU CAN SEE THE TITLE IN COLOUR!!!!, "man it SOUNDS great" you think.
who would be thinking: "Man it LOOKS great the way I can choose U2" ....with half the batteri life ! ! !
Trust me, you already have found what your looking for, it's called the iPod NO COLOUR SCREEN ! ! !
Let's not even get into the talk about watching pictures on that small screen cause that's even less interesting
Some people want new tech in their product just because it's doable. Don't listen to them, they HYPE new tech even if it's not something you would ever use. New is not always good, sometimes it's bad
This was a long post to say something really short, but there has been so much talk about this idea, and it's just plain goofy
I'm sure we have not seen the last post on the "Colour screen iPod" hype yet, but that's ok, we all got a sence of humor that needs to be dusted off from time to time...
so, untill next time....
A color screen is not "coloured letters" or whatever the hell Zib the Fib is going on about, it's about having a bright, vibrant, sharp display on an expensive music player.
Just about every other mobile device has one -- maybe you've seen a few mobile phones in your day. Oh yeah, but then why would anyone need a color screen to dial a phone...
Apple is gonna hold back until either the competition heats up or demand begins to wane before they upgrade the screen to something from this century.
The battery performance shouldn't be an issue either, as many devices have good screens with same hours of performance, such as palm/treo devices, anything from Sony, mobile phones, etc.

Well hello, my, ehhh, big fan?
Zib the Fib ?
Your comparison is kind of funny. You compare other divices like phones and palm divices with the iPod on battery lenght.
you may know the answers, but you don't know the questions!
Shouldn't you really be asking the real question: what will give your iPod more batteri-life, colour or no colour screens?
Wouldn't the phone have longer batteri-life if it didn't have colour displays? Ofcause, this is like talking about if a TV would comsume less power if it had a black 'n white screen, it's pointless because we clearly prefer colour since we're watching MOVING PICTURES on it. Eeehhh and doesn't those phone have eehh cameras build in? OR get messages with colour photos? Does your iPod take pictures or get SMS messages or eMail with colour pictures?
If you ask the right questions you don't end up with the right answers to the wrong questions
Sharp displays are nice, but I think the current displays work just fine. If Apple can make them even nicer, I hope they will. Just don't give me colour displays at the cost of battery, so I can watch eeeehhh song titles in colour, please don't, I want battery life
Peace

Even if you used one of those devices for several hours straight, they're using solid-state memory, which takes a much lower toll on battery life. iPods have hard drives, which decrease your batter performance drastically. Add to that the huge jump in processing power it would take to process the kind of 16-bit color some people seem to be craving, and you've got yourself an unuseable brick.
And by the way, the reason that people buy color phones and handhelds is that they have to. The makers of these particular devices now give you no other option. Would I have a color phone if I could have gotten a B/W one for less? Absolutely not. I make phone calls with the thing.
Fortunately, with iPods we don't have this problem.
So maybe Apple could find a small OLED or something that doesn't drain batteries that much.
There are many applications for this:
-Color coded calendars
-Notes with colors
-Games with colors are more fun
-You could put color labels on your playlists (easier to spot by color if you have many)
-Small screen savers or visualizations
-iPhoto slideshows (if the screens were larger)
I can live without it, I'm just saying it would be very cool. I also don't think Apple would do this soon, I just like the idea. But that's just my opinion.
I know they have a chip that can do this in a mockup, but it's probably not likely to be produced.

Whatever, I want a color screen. For the sake of argument, the Gameboy Advance has one and runs for 10 freaking hours on two AA's, and the newer, rechargable version is backlit. The screen is even larger than the iPod's.

I was with you until you mentioned wanting "small screen savers or visualizations" & "iPhoto slideshows".
The processor in the iPod would have to have a lot more punch to it to accomplish these processor-intensive tasks; making the iPod significantly more expensive.
Perhaps there is a market for an iPod Max; costing a couple hundred extra - but I doubt it.
And in true Apple style, it will have a purpose. ie viewing iPhoto slides, iTunes visualisations, album cover art and iCal.
Movies? Maybe. But maybe a more specific device may emerge.
Personally, I think that the current iPod is just about saturated with regard to hard drive size and refinement of scroll wheel into click scroll wheel. And when(!) Apple intro' the 60 gig iPod...well, Apple's own research shows most people don't have 1000 songs on their computer. I don't. None of my friends do.
iPod mini leaves us with more than enough for most.
That leaves the iPod with one key gimmick for the 'next' generation.
Colour screen. TV connectivity.
Watch iPhoto slide shows, brief video clips (how's the current mini-hard drive stand up to long haul video playing?) tv can become your stereo with iTunes visualisations. iCal viewing.
iPod with Mac backup/home feature? Connect your iPod to your digital camera for loads more memory/storage?
Apple do DO colour. As iMacs/iPod mini etc have proven. Matter of time. If only in a limited mobile phone 'rest the screen' sort of way. Anything if it helps maintain the iPod's market position. From that point of view? Inevitable. Look for it middle or late next year.
ER. I don't see much more than this. But the 60 gig level might make sense. As the iPod mini grows in stature, where does it leave the iPod?
To become truly visual, I think we're talking another device.
iPod/iSight?
The iPod may morph into a photo taker/video capture. There are devices on the market that can do this for much less than the price of the iPod.
iPod/iPhone/iSight?
Video conferencing in the palm of your hand? Phone over net via a .Mac account?
A tablet..? I think Apple will hop into this market when the timei s right, redefine it as only Apple can and leave M$ and Sony gasping...
By then, Inkwell may well be more refined and the 'tablet' will dock/companion with the 'screen mac' iMac 3.
Remember, the next version of 'Tiger' will have a very scaleable Quicktime codec that will scale from mobile content to hi-def.
What does that tell you? Now. Nothing. In the future? Who'd a thought 'music player' over 3 years ago?
Speculatively,
Lemon Bon Bon
Just in case we have.
s yn·es·the·sia also syn·aes·the·sia (sîn´îs-thê¹zhe) noun
1. A condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, as when the hearing of a sound produces the visualization of a color.
2. A sensation felt in one part of the body as a result of stimulus applied to another, as in referred pain.
3. The description of one kind of sense impression by using words that normally describe another.
syn´es·thet¹ic (-thèt¹îk) adjective
syn·es·thete (sîn¹îs-thêt´) noun
A person who experiences synesthesia, as by having a secondary sensation of sound as color or of color as sound.
Niche market indeed!
Color screens now I want to hear my music in Color damnit!!!
The iPod is successful because it strives to be a perfect music player rather than a gadget for geeks to fiddle with. While a color screen might be 'neat', it would decrease battery life significantly.
Thankfully, apple understands that the iPod is successful because it is, first and foremost, a music player. All other features should take a backseat. Most other manufactures have yet to grasp this design philosophy. They're still lengthening their feature lists rather than making a device that is useful for the majority of their market... and this is why they fail when apple's iPod is a huge success.
I am interested in playing music and looking at the screen as little as possible. Yes, I'd actually pay more for a monochrome rather than a color-screen equiped iPod.

Well, Synaesthesia isn't limited to just auditory or visual stimuli. The same applies to taste, smell, and touch. Why don't we just have iPods with all kinds of textures? Or maybe colored with those scented magic markers we used to use in school so a snyesthete can take a whiff of it any time he/she wants and have a mild trip about it.
earbud=tastebud
It's a music player. I don't want to pay for features that have no meaning to me in that context. I don't want a phone built in either because I have a phone I can throw around and never worry if it gets lost. I don't want it to take pictures or play video. These are other tasks which deserve to be satisfied with another device more suited to their needs.
I do not want a "Swiss Army Pod". I want music done well. The iPod is ideal as it is.

The thing about devices like handhelds and phones is that you don't spend 6 hours straight using them and expect the battery to hold up. Try and do that with your phone, and see what happens. And that's even with the pretty color screen shutting itself off after a few seconds, as mine and probably everyone else's does.

...couldn't have said it better. It's good we are having this talk. I hope people will wake up from this state of mind that just craves NEW STUFF
I seriously don't think Apple would hear anything but complaints about batteri-life if they released this colour iPod. Look at how much bad press they have already gotten on the subject! ...ofcause it all drowns in all the good press they also get for the iPod.

Well to take your post with a sense of humor, I guess movies like "Smallville" or "Who shrunk the kids" or should it be "Who shrunk my TV" ?
You won't be inviting the neigbors over for a cool game of football on that thing will you ? Ofcause I know that was not your point either, but it's still humorus point
I really really don't think any of you would actually be watching pictures on the iPod, definitely not movies...forign movies are out of the question...how would you actually READ the subtitles
However, on another note, Steve Jobs have hinted at some convention where he was a member of the "sitting wise" on stage, that Apple did see a market for a video player that connected to your TV.
Now THAT*S a whole other thing....
