G5 PowerMacs, PowerBooks AND iMacs?

I think there will be a wide product change soon. More than just iMac. Why?

Peek at this file from the latest Mac OS X 10.3.5 update:

/System/Library/Extensions/AppleMacRISC4PE.kext/Content/Info.plist

<key>IOPlatformPluginTable</key>

<dict>

<key>PowerBook7,1</key>

<string>SMU_Neo2_PlatformPlugin</string>

<key>PowerBook7,2</key>

<string>SMU_Neo2_PlatformPlugin</string>

<key>PowerMac7,2</key>

<string>PowerMac7_2_PlatformPlugin</string>

<key>PowerMac7,3</key>

<string>PowerMac7_2_PlatformPlugin</string>

<key>PowerMac8,1</key>

<string>SMU_Neo2_PlatformPlugin</string>

<key>PowerMac9,1</key>

<string>SMU_Neo2_PlatformPlugin</string>

<key>RackMac3,1</key>

<string>RackMac3_1_PlatformPlugin</string>

Now PowerBook7,1 PowerBook7,2 PowerMac8,1 (new iMac) and PowerMac9,1 (?) all get the SMU_Neo2 specs. Hmm, in 10.3.4 just the PowerMac8,1 had that spec.

Looks like we get a PowerTune G5 system for PowerBooks, iMacs and a new PowerMac, from what I can tell.

    PowerBook 7,1

    PowerBook 7,2

    PowerMac 7,3

    PowerMac 8,1

    PowerMac 9,1

    New! Whoa!

    Apple Museum

^ no new Macs we know about yet!

We already kind of know that PowerMac 8,1 is the new iMac.

    Oh my god!!! Holy crap!

Wow, PowerMac 9,1. Conventional wisdom tells us even numbered models are iMac/eMac type machines while odd numbered models suggest tower/desktop type machines.... like a cube.

I think I'd rather see a more powerful workstation-type system from Apple than a Return of Trinity. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Nice to know they are really being aggressive, however.

Do you think we could see a G5 Powerbook before 2005?

Whew! That's the big question. We know that Tiger is due in early/mid 2005 and why on Earth would Apple include the PowerBook7,1 and PowerBook7,2 specs in 10.3.5 unless they were going to release a product before then? It would seem likely, contrary to what they have said in the press about it. With PowerTune, I think they have the chance of doing it. There are obstacles, such as battery life and the obvious heat issues to deal with, but I am nearly certain that we will be seeing something really new in the PowerBooks.

I guess we can rule out an incremental G4 update in the PowerBooks unless we are talking about something completely different which are just using the PowerBook tag in that plugin table. I just don't see how, but it sure seems likely now.

Wow. That is certainly an exciting idea. I can just see a Powerbook G5 under my Christmas tree...

    no, i don't think so;

these are probally all G5/PPC970 enabled machines.

    SMU_Neo2 specs means PPC970, right?

the real problem is: just 2 models powerbook instead of 3.

    that means no 12" pbG5.

maybe someone can look for another new powerbook... in those... what is it, anyway?

Hehe, the Apple Store is closed, but I would be really surprised to see anything new coming today in the hardware front.

As long as it's not like Star Trek films... odd numbers suck... even numbers rock.
