I think in one form or another the 'LCD' AIO is the approach they will take.

    Much like the above design.

I stil think it's Alu Studio Display 17 inch. The missing LCD link in Apple's line up.

Want a 17 inch LCD? Get the new Alu iMac.

    It will be sexy.

Basically a Powerbook G5 strapped to the back of the Alu display.

The 'padding' will look relatively small compared to the screen size I would have thought...

Available in 17, 20 or 23 inch versions...?

I know PowerTune will help, but do you think they can cram a G5 in that small of an enclosure without the cheese grater casing of the PowerMacs?

Actually, if we're going by the TS rumors , the CPU will be behind the LCD. So, they'd have to put some kind of grates on the sides of the LCD and run air through the back of the screen, wouldn't they?

Played with an AIO VAIO at PC World yesterday...man that thing is ugly.

In Ive's present geometric brutalist mode I would expect just a chunky flat LDC style housing...but you never know. The iMac is always something of a design icon and Ive may use the opportunity to unviel the next Apple design direction. The flat LCD style may be too similar to the present G5/Display Aluminium on Aluminium chunkiness for the neccessary market differentiation. This thing has to sit on Receptionist's swanky desks and in your living room. Its always a hard thing to pull off.

I think they could practically leave the iMac's design alone, and they might...with just subtle changes like an aluminum enclosure. The G5 is the main piece of the update.

Steve did say that the current iMac has a beauty and a grace that will last the next decade. He may have meant that the computer you buy now will still look relevant in a decade, he may have meant that it will be Apple's base for the iMac's design for the next decade. I'm not sure.

I think he said that before costs rose and sales tanked.

i know i may be reading too much into this, but apple just started circulating this ad banner, and it does ask a bit of a leading question...

i would fill in the blank with "a supercomputer in your lap," but maybe somewhere else?

anyway, like i was saying, maybe this is a hint, maybe it's nothing. but it piqued my curiosity.

It's not a secret that the next big thing from Apple will be the new Imac. Apple itself said that a new I mac is on the way. The secret is it's design and specifications.

A supercomputer on your desk ... a hole in your wallet.

This seems quite a strong hint that a G5 powerbook is to be announced. There isn't really any other inference that could be read from this.

The iMac G5, if in fact the specs are correct, would be 1/2 a supercomputer on your desk - since all of the desktops are now duals. That doesn't make for enthralling ad copy.

Hmm. If they release a G5 laptop at the Expo I will be going through computers faster than Murbot.

well, like i said, i might be reading too much into it, and hell, it's just a banner ad. not like a "way beyond the rumors sites" splash on apple.com. but it does seem to lend itself to a sort of duality in the eventual answer, like "next: a supercomputer in the palm of your hands" or something like that.

goddamn... 6 more days, huh? the 31st needs to friggin' get here already... but i think my head might explode from prolonged exposure to phil's slightly exaggerated version of the RDF.
