Perhaps a special version with low K, and SSOI will be able to bring this chip into a laptop. But there is no sign that IBM has started to use this tech for the G5.

Dude, get out of here. If we wanted to talk about stuff like that, we would be in current hardware, not future hardware.

Personally, I think that if you slap some water cooling on this powerbook, then it could be shipped in a month. Who needs fancy low k stuff? Water cooling will fix all our problems. Here's my mockup of the soon to be released powerbook running virtual PC for the G5

Hmmm... a G5 in a Titanium Powerbook, that would be a nice portable grilling unit. Anybody want some bacon and eggs? Damn, the battery won't last long enough to cook the bacon and eggs.

I have to agree with Powerdoc, Apple can't put a 970FX in a 1" Powerbook, it would be too hot and take too much power. My guess is Apple is going to delay until it gets a faster G4 or a low-power G5 - maybe one is on the way, but I haven't heard a rumor about it.

There may be some truth to there being a PB update round the corner. Apple are giving me a new replacement 12" powerbook, but for some reason it is likely to take at least two more weeks (already on order for one). There are a good few in stock in shops round London, but as Apple's pointlessly unbending internal beaurocracy (sp?) only allows for one to be ordered completely new from what sounds like the factory, it'll take a while. Also, while trying to find out a quicker way of getting one (I failed!) a sales rep from a major London department store said that they were out of ALL powerbooks, and that they were rumoured to be G5s. (Yeah - like he knows! )

Anyhow, on the other side of things, the US AppleStore says that a 12" PB would ship within 24 hrs - WHAT IS IT?!?!?!

So it looks like there will either have G7 "Melt your lap-tops" by yesterday, or we'll all be touting our 'kick-ass' '040s for years to come...

They might not be able to put one into a 1" powerbook, but they could expand the powerbook line and and give us a portable G5. PC companies are putting full 3.4GHz P4s into portables -- the G5 can't be hotter than that.

The place to look for G5 PB progress may be the xServe page. The G5 PB is not likely to be ahead of the announcement of a 2.5 or 3.0 GHz xServe.

As the xServe is a low volume system, early low yield CPUs are likely to go there first.

The thermal budget of the xServe is quite tight, so a faster xServe implies that IBM can produce the improved dielectric in some quantity to solve the G5 thermal issues.

The improved dielectric, in turn, can lead to lower operating voltages that are more suitable for laptop use.

And on top of this is, the new iMac is the first G5-based Mac that utilizes PowerTune. On the horizon is a PowerBook7,1 PowerBook7,2 and PowerMac9,1 all utilizing 970fx with PowerTune.

    Is this BS?

I heard that a G5 PB is coming out the day after tomorrow AND Apple is going to outsource the hardware contract to this company..

I can see new PBs in a month or so- it is time for a refresh. I think that we will get one more iteration of G4s and then we will get G5s next summer, and G5s at about 1.8GHz. I just don't see Apple making G5 powerbooks in the next rev. Sorry, maybe I lack imagination, but there is much more to a PB than the CPU- there are also new mobo issues, power constraints of a 600MHz bus, etc.

    New PowerBook G4 coming

As we've told you in the past, this Autumn will show us another round of PowerBook G4 series. (G5 PowerBooks will come in Spring/Summer 2005.) According to our sources, there'll be nothing radical about the next upgrade to the PBG4. We'll see the 12" model move up to 1.6 GHz, as well as the lower-end 15" model. The high end 15" and the 17" model will get the 1.8 GHz processor.

All of them are PPC 7448 processors that should run cool enough at these high rates (as cool as current PBs, our sources put it, although we find that not really 'cool' on some occasions...). The graphics card will be the ATi Mobility Radeon 9800 for 15 and 17 inch models, the 12" will - according to sources - stay at its current nVidia card but lowered in price by 100 USD. The release date for the PowerBooks has been specified as "mid to end October".

If there is no genuinely faster G4 chip available, then Apple will go with ption A, with more RAM, larger HD, and a lower price. If Apple dropped the price by 10% and bumped the options a bit, then that would make quite a few people happy. Of course, Apple can only do that for one release... not that they haven't had to do it for more than one, but it is a stopgap measure.

Sounds like a decent hold me over upgrade. Nice video card!

A 1.8GHz CPU running on MaxBus? oh the shame!

looks like my wait is going to be extended till next fall, because you know they wont have a new powerbook model out by then other than bump ups.

Is not the iMac G5 good for you? Do you really need a machine that can run on battery and be taken on the road?

I'll never buy a desktop again. Portables are just too useful and convenient.
