You actually know what's in the thing... So add up the cost.

What can they make cheaper? The answer to that question = eMac.

I just don't think they can afford to keep the eMac line running... The CRT is unique, and thus must run up the cost of production.

LCDs on the other hand, are used across every other computer they sell.

Call me stupid, but why don't they just make an LCD eMac?

    FormatC2 has a valid point.

As CRTs become more scarce, the prices will start to rise. Perhaps the eMac prices will go up before the iMac prices come down.

Either way, the eMac will be discontinued when the eMac price approaches the iMac price.

I envision that the eMac may be dropped soon-as there is a edu. iMac G5 config.

Edu iMacs have been released-- like the low end 17", except they don't have an optical drive. Priced at $1099 (IIRC), and the eMac is still being sold...

The eMac is going to be around at least until Apple can replace it with an iMac at the eMac's price points. It might even stick around after that.

CRT prices are still falling.. CRTs are still desired... Hell I bought 2 19" P95f+ Viewsonics for 150 each...300 bucks and i'm running dual 19" on my dual g5. I'd much rather have these 2 CRTs then a 20" lcd for 1300...

Point is on the LCD VS CRT... crt == ~65 for the tube... lcd == ~550... HUGE difference. A crt is extremely simple to make compared to an lcd. Price won't be comparable for a VERY LONG TIME.

When the original iMac went from tray load CD to slot load CD, the redesign included a shorter CRT tube, which made the iMac slightly smaller than the original model. I have no idea how 'short' the eMac CRT is, but maybe they could make it a smaller enclosure still with a 17" CRT.
