I have been trying to figure out what Apple has to gain from an iPhone. Don't get me wrong, I think Apple (as usual) would do a great job with it. But let's look at some of the "facts" of the situation:

    1. There are a ton of phones of various shapes and sizes already...apparently meeting the needs of most/many people.

    2. The phones are, generally, getting into the hands of consumers in mass numbers through freebee/bundling deals with service providers. These guys don't really care what phones they give away...they just want your monthly dollars. Therefore, it seems unlikely that Apple would be able to leverage a striking competitive advantage in this area.

    3. Design-wise, what could Apple bring that isn't really already there? If anything, Apple's minimalist design ethos would tend to go against the current "Swiss Army Knife" trend in mobile phones.

    4. What part of the thing would Apple control. Steve said in an interview that they like to (as do most smart companies) control some piece of the technology/product. With iPod the AAC + FairPlay underlying technology is part of it...at the more visible level it is iTunes and iTMS that control the user experience. What would this be with iPhone?

    5. There have been some competitors that have been doing this for quite some time...and are quite good at it.

All of these things don't point to Apple doing an iPhone. Is just doesn't make much sense.

Now...if you were to talk about other wireless, portable devices...there might be something to it...but I don't know what that is right now.

    Me neither.

I was wondering if the flash memory coming from Toshiba might be used in some upcoming Apple/Motorola product rather than being destined for an Apple flash-based iPod, tho for that it makes more sense they'd be selling it to Motorola. I loosely borrowed the "iPhone" name (thus the quotes), but agree with your reasons why a "real" iPhone seems unlikely in the way most people would think of one.

Just looking at AppleInsider's information from a different angle.

Non-conspiracy theory: Almost all Apple products (Macs, iPods, AirPort Express, etc.) have flash to store firmware. Maybe Apple got a good deal on this "boring" flash from Toshiba.
