Another: "How do I share my mac printer with an xp machine" thread

I have read most of the threads on here but I have a problem. I am on a router that assigns IP address automatically. If my computer is not hte first to turn on in the morning I will get a different IP than the day before.



How in the world do I share my printer (EPSON R300) on my iMac G5 10.3.7 with my wife's XP box?



I have the file and printer sharing turned on (on my mac). My wife's computer can see my printer and is installed as the default printer. However, nothing happens. When the mouse hoovers over the printer name on the xp box, it reads "Access Denied" crap.



I was hoping that printer sharing would be easier but oh well. Any thoughts?

You get the "Access Denied" message because the XP box has not logged onto the Mac. From the XP box, double-click the Neighborhood Network icon and navigate to the Mac. Eventually you will be asked for a login name and password - these are the same as what you use on the Mac's user account. After the XP box is logged in, you should be able to access the R300 as a networked printer. Please post back and let us know how you make out.

I went through NN and clicked on my Mac icon and it asked for my username and password. Entered it in and file sharing works great.



However, when I go to print a document, MS Word for example, windows tell me windows is still waiting for the printer. Then I get an error saying it can't print to the printer.



However, when I hoover the mouse over the printer icon in the printer dialog box it says, "Ready" instead of access denied.

How did you install the printer on XP? Did you install it as a network printer or a local printer? What is the port that is being used?

I installed the printer as a network printer. I am not sure what port is being used. I have never had to look at that before.



I will try and find that out.

Hi Eric,



You may want to delete and reinstall the printer driver on the XP box. Also, when you connect to the Mac from the XP box, which printer icon do you use? By this I mean that when you enter the Mac's password you see the Mac's hard drive and icons for all of the attached printers. There is also a "Printers" folder here which should contain the same printers, but with a slightly different version of the network printer icon.

Deleted and reinstalled printer driver three more times. No luck.

Which printer icon did you use? Are you getting any error messages? Are you printing through Gimp-Print/CUPS? The printer icons in the printer folder should give you "Connect" as an option when you right-click one of them. Select "Connect" and you should be able to load the driver into the XP box.



By the way, if the Add Printer Wizard asks you to select the driver from a list, you can also try picking an Apple LaserWirter printer such as the 16/600. This will send your print jobs as Postscript 2 and CUPS will interpret this and convert using the driver on the Mac (at least this is how it works in Jaguar).



If you're still having problems let me know and I'll try this again at home to see if we can figure out what we are missing.

Step 1



I shared my printer on my imac.









Step 2

On the XP box, I go through network neighborhood and click through the file explorer and log into my imac computer. Completing this step is the only way I can get the printer to show up in the add printer dialog box.









Step 3



I got on the XP box and went through the "Add Printer" menu's. I added a network printer that I found on my iMac.







Step 4



When I go to print on the XP machine, I get this message:







All I want to do is share my printer on my mac with my wife's computer. Is there an easier way?

Hmmm...



First, lets make sure that this isn't a simple thing that we are overlooking.



On the Mac, please verify that in System Preferences/Sharing that on the "Services" tab that you have Personal File Sharing, Windows File Sharing and Printer Sharing checked off. If this is done, the same boxes should be checked off on the "Firewall" tab.



Next, go to System Preferences/Network and select the Appletalk tab. Verify that "Make AppleTalk Active" is checked off.



If all of this is correct, then I believe that the problem may be on the XP side. I noticed that your R300 printer appears twice in the list you pasted into your post - did you try the R300 printer that is listed two lines above the one that is highlighted? If so, what was the result? I believe that the "Photo Wizard..." error message is from some feature on the R300 that is more than a simple printer driver.

When I go to System Preferences/Network I can't find a tab at all. What is Appletalk?

I noticed that XP is showing two printers. Not sure why but I have tried both with no success.



I will get out my Dell Notebook and try and setup the printer on that machine.

Got out the new Dell M60.



I then have to go through Network Neighborhood and gain access to my imac through file sharing and go back through the "Add Printer" crap. I bet it will show up then.



I think I figured out what I need to do. Go through Xp's Network Neighborhood and find my mac printer that way. Then add the printer that way instead of going through "Add Printer" (although I don't know what difference it would make). Unfortunately, I am out ink. I have to run to town and get some ink. Sucks!! That is a 90 minute round trip, especially this time of year. I will be back with an update on my dell. I believe it may work on my dell but who knows. If it does, then I will redo my wife's computer that way.



Btw, my dell list anothe printer on my network twice too. It has the exact address of the other printer. I think that is by design.

Back! Replaced the ink catridge and no luck getting my Dell to print. I do not get an error though like my wifes box. So, I am stuck.

First, the Network icon in 10.3 is a little different than in 10.2. I'm not sure where you verify that it is turned on, but I'll leave that to you and anyone else who is running Panther who wants to post.



As for what to try next, my understanding was that in Jaguar, you had to install and activate SAMBA, which I had done per the instructions here:

I had exchanged e-mail with William White and I recall him mentioning that most of what he had written for Jaguar printing was obsolete with Panther - that most of this was "built in."



By the way, you had mentioned previously that the printer showed as "paused," from the XP box, if you right-click the printer icon in the printers folder on the XP box, is there a check mark next to pause? If so, can you un-check it?

One other thing to verify - if you plug the R300 directly into the XP box, can it print? If so, we've just eliminated the printer driver as a cause, and can focus on the networking aspect.

Yes, it can print directly to the printer just fine when plugged in to the XP machine directly.



At this point, I just want basic print options. Nothing fancy. Any ideas on how to get just the basic stuff printing?

Hi Aplnub,

In System Prefs/Sharing, try deselecting and then reselecting Printer Sharing. In some cases, printer sharing needed to be activated after both machines were booted and networked so that they would see each other and the printers that are available.



Basically, AFAICT, you have everything that you need to have this working. If it is still not working, I suspect that you have an obscure setting somewhere that needs to be changed. Hopefully someone else who has experienced this problem before can chime in.

I have reinstalled, installed, stop printer sharing, restarted it. I can get the pritner driver installed on my XP machines, but no luck printing.



Is there another way I can install generic printer drivers on my XP machines that will work on my Epson R300 printe ron my Mac? I am desperate. My wife is about to have a fit.

Success at last!!



This may seem stupid but I have the printer working on my Dell notebook now. The trick is to install an Apple Color Laser Writer (or any postscript) driver instead of the printer software that came with the computer.



Isn't that a load of bull???



It's working beautifully at the moment. I am going to restart both computers and see if I need to to log into the mac everytime I boot up the Dell to print.



Then I will get my wife's XP box printing through my Mac.



I will be back.

When I reboot an XP machine it forgets about the installed printer. I have to go through Network Neighborhood and log into the Mac like I am trying to access the network files on the mac. Once that is done, everything works fine.



Anyone else expereience this problem? For now, it will do...
