Yes, this is the same procedure that we follow - if the XP box is off of the network, we have to log on again to obtain access to the printer.
In the link that I posted above from William White, he provides an explanation and a fairly detailed procedure for setting up printing from WinXP through Jaguar, but this was supposed to be "fixed" with Panther. Glad you got all of the pieces together.
Lastly, if you reboot the Mac you may have to stop and restart Printer Sharing again for this to continue working. I had written an AppleScript for this to happen automatically in Jaguar. Let me know if you need a copy; I'll be happy to send it your way.
Deleted and reinstalled printer driver three more times. No luck.

I've struggled to install my printer on my PC wirelessly, but it works the opposite way. Plug the R300 into your wife's XP box and your mac can print to that really easily.
