I think Cringley makes the best argument yet for the Mac-in-the-living-room fantasy (I mean "fantasy" in a good way), though of course I still wonder whether broadband is really widespread enough to make it viable. I think Cringley's scenario is far more likely than the TiVO "Asteroid" rumor. I do wonder if Asteroid does tie in to the living room in some braoder way and with the Mac mini, but TV still looks too risky and leaves too much out of Apple's control to really be viable also. If I had to pick, I'd pick Cringley's HD movie download scepulation because even though I don't think there's a critical mass of broadband users out there, at least in the US, they could at least grow with that market into a dominant position [added:] for HD content delivery.
[added:] another thing I thought of is why Sony would be interested, since they're behind Blu-Ray and this idea would do an end-run around that. Anyway, aside from having Sony HD displays at Apple Stores, what would Sony really bring to the table?
As far as renting, I suppose with advancements in QT 7 and H.264, you could stream a movie on a rental model to your TV over IP, not just download them on a purchase model. But a lot of people do like to buy DVDs, and this idea would be to supplant that market with HD content, so maybe Apple would let NetFlix take the rental market for itself? Nah.
Perhaps Nick De Plume F*ed up the apple sony deal? That would have been the keynote to watch! Sony and Apple announce the iFlix store using mac hardware and your PSP you can take your itunes and your imovies with you on your ipod or psp!
Year of HD oh yea!
now it is time to review those pscates mockups in a different light!

Broadband: exactly
TV: exactly
Movies, on the other hand, can be "packaged" differently to fit the iTMS mold better.
My concern is about the fact that most people rent movies instead of owning them. Even with H.264, the downloads would be huge.
I'm not against the idea. YARSFA* after all, but it being a good fantasy is a good assessment.
