Buyers of the dual 1.42 were mighty angry at the original G5s...almost as much as he owners of single 1.8 --> dual 1.8.

I bought my PB three months ago and have not regretted it.

I would love to have a G5 PB but not at the expense of a larger more bulky package. I have no problems waiting.

I am assuming Tiger is taking up most of Apple's time at the moment.

Whether it comes this year or not it won't be a problem for me.

I am sure my PB will last me that long.

The only thing I still cling to a PC for is FPS.

EVERYTHING else gets done on this wonderful little notebook.

I think it will depend on the application, just like it did when the PowerBook G3 became the PowerBook G4. I recall Final Cut Pro being much faster rendering than it was on the Pismo PowerBook G3.

I will not be annoyed if a G5 comes out - unless it's 2.5GHz with 1.25 GHz FSB etc. I want to get a G5 in a few years time so bring them out and start to improve them already!!

I think Apple are large enough to concentrate on iBook updates, iPod updates, PowerBook updates, PowerMac updates and iMac updates as well as Tiger and software. Apple are a big company. However, I can't wait for Tiger to come out. I'm going to be queuing for it!!!!

    Certainly.

They wanted to have a G5 ready for January, that's why the update took so long.

No, the update took that long since there was not available a new CPU. The 7447B in use now has surfaced around December 2004 and Apple waited to have enough of them in order to proceeed to a Powerbook update.

No way, if you mean dual core G4 (32-bit). Look this:

    Just my two cents:

if ytou are going to bother to compare "flagships" to "flagships"

At least use a notebook in the same class.

This HP is not coparable to a powerbook.

One can get an HP 17" with:

    1gig of Ram

    100 gig HD

    P4 3.42 ghz/ 1mb L2 Cache / 800 mhz FSB

    256 mb Graphics Card

    802.11g

XP Media edition for 2200 bucks.

    DVD Burner

in case you didn't notice they are using a desktop chip, whick cuts costs significantly. They could even be using a desktop drive.

The powerbooks are a bit underspeced, but pricewise are in line with other premium notebooks with notebook class chips. Here is a more apples to apple comparison:

Here is what I configured from Dell for about $2500. And this is very inline with the 17" powerbook

    Inspiron 9200

    Intel¨ Pentium¨ M Processor 765 (2.10GHz/400MHz FSB)

    Microsoft¨ Windows¨ XP Professional

17" UltraSharpª Wide Screen XGA+ Display

    512MB DDR SDRAM at 333MHz 1 Dimm

    8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer write capability

    100GB Hard Drive

    128MB ATI'sª Mobility Radeonª 9700

    Dell¨ Wireless 1350 Internal Wireless (802.11b/g, 54Mbps)

Dellª TrueMobileª 300 Bluetooth Internal Card

53 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

    Productivity Pack including WordPerfect¨

    Adobe¨ Acrobat¨ Reader 6.0

Dell Jukebox - easy-to-use music player and CD burning software

Photo Album Premium - Enhance, Organize, and Share Photos

    1 Year Basic Mail-In Plan

Which is very close to the powerbook price, but is a bit faster, and a bit heavier.

But I think I'll hold out for a powerbook g5. But the current lineup of powerbooks is a decent value.
