I'll do it, I hate doing anything free, but you can consider my bill paid courtesy of the government of Ontario. I'll even work from home!

I have a short list of demands you can square wqith my agent first...

I kind of glossed over some replies so I may have missed it but I didn't see much if any support for Guliver's position. First, let me say I am very pleased overall with the new displays; mainly because of the price.

And all you power users that frequent these boards would love the wider aspect because you are video editing or doing some other productive function. However, look over the shoulder of your friends whose lives dont center around computers and see what they do--surf the web and scroll documents. So with that audience in mind he has a point.

But the 20" is a wee bit taller than the 17" and tall enough. Its that 17" iMac that doesnt pass the minimal height test in my opinion.

Oh, about putting he dock on the sides, Ive done it, and the problem is that its not centrally located. The bottom is just the convenient place.

But I LOVE THE NEW PRICES!!!!

I wondered whether that's why the new 20 inch display has a slightly odd resolution, 1680 X 1050 rather than 1600 X 1024, to allow the dock to be positioned at the side or bottom whilst still retaining a 1600 X 1024 usable desktop.

At first, I thought that the dock would be better on the side of the screen, allowing me to view more of a document at once. However, after switching back and forth for a couple years, the dock now lives permanently at the bottom of my screen. I think many users have undergone such experimentation with similar results.

I prefer to have my current workspace visible yet still have room devoted to other windows. This allows me to switch back and forth quickly between apps. I seldom run a window in windows-esque full screen. Instead, I have terminal, iChat, finder, iTunes, email and other apps like photoshop or project builder visible to the left and right of the window for my current app.

Wide aspect ratio displays makes the space around our front-most windows more contiguous. Instead of having a skinny border around the sides for viewing background windows, the extra space forms a more usuable, more square region for toolbars and other apps. Having the dock at the bottom provides a wider aspect-ratio work area.

Apple seems to be approaching interface and hardware design with these considerations in mind. I suspect we'll see tool-pallettes starting to replace toolbars for use with Apple's wide-aspect displays and wide-aspect work-area.

I usually keep my dock on auto-hide to the right...I feel it works best out of the way, and I never accidentally go all the way over there unless I am going to the dock. This positioning has worked out best for me.

As for the new monitors.....MMmmm....flatscreen....wow, I can actually afford a big one....Penis, this ones for you.

Why do some people think if they can't use something, then no one else can??

I personally would love 3 of the 23" displays for left, center and right, with a couple of 17's on the upper level of my desk. But that's just me. So, send me all those "unusable" displays and I'll figure out a way to hook 'em up!

Multiple monitors aren't quite as nice when watching movies or playing games... then the big screen and cost is justified (though imo multiple screen looks more l337 )

The cinema display is great. I've used one for about 18 months. It works well with everything. I can work on giant spread sheets, graphics documents with lots of pallets and inspectors open, watch DVDs, browse pictures more easily in graphic converter, create documents in half the screen with AppleWorks while reading source emails in Mail.app on the other half of the screen, etc.

One interestng thing is that after using this for about six months I found it easier to use small screens. Once I felt I had enough space it was somehow easier to go back to my PowerBook during travels.

I saw a rumor somewhere that Apple will come out with something larger than the 23 inch display. Perhaps next spring will be a good time to upgrade to a 970 based PM and a giant flat panel.

    Yes! I am looking for something about 34", with a 16 x 10 aspect ratio, running 3840 x 2400...

Mmmm... Now THAT is a big screen!

Certainly not anyone who has the new 12" Powerbook.

Looks like only those who have a 15" and up laptop or a tower will be in the market.

Kinda stupid to leave out all those other millions of iBook and 12"PB owners.
