    Damn.

I suppose suicide is the ultimate exit for a cynic with a flair for the dramatic. One less insanely brilliant / brilliantly insane thinker on the planet.

    Damn.

    Sad Times.

He was the most *honest* journalist I can think of, sometimes brutally, of course, but would we expect less?

    He will be missed.

I was thinking more along the lines of, abusing alcohol your entire life increases the likelihood that you'll shoot yourself in the head.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was my introduction to HST. The opening paragraph is classic:

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold....

at another forum, i saw the cover letter on a 20+ page suicide note. he definitely did it intentionally. for those on terra-firma who appreciated him, this is a loss. i am sad. the suicide note coverletter was written in typical gonzo style. while creepy and such, it is an interesting and kind of morbid fun read.

That was a joke by SKMDC at 'Nova. Re-read it. And it was "from" "Duke" from Doonesbury, not even HST. This is how rumors start.

I think it was more homage than joke...at least I took it as such.

    Right, homage.

Besides, people deal with loss with humor sometimes.
