either does your reply. yer 35? grow up. i didn't ask for this abuse
The "abuse" was the stfu part, which I should have done without and I apologize.
The part you meant as the abuse I suspect, "your opinion of their decisions has utterly no importance" I assure you is not abuse but the truth.
Oh and you personalized it too much. I mean "one's opinion of their decision has utterly no importance" which includes my opinion of their decision too.
You can't blather on about personal liberties, choice, life and then deny a person their right to end their life on their own terms. Doing so hilights the selfishness and even perhaps cowardice of the survivors, not the deceased.
If you love someone you need to respect the way they want to go.
To me, how he did it seems needlessly cruel and violent, but it's not for me to say. I suspect close friends of his will "get it" more then the rest of us do.
hmm, hadn't occurred to me that someone would joke about such a thing. i figured it was Raoul (ya know, like from f&lilv). its a lot less funny now.
First of all, the name, Raoul Duke is a Thompson creation, he was pissed to hell that Trudeau used the name for the character.
As to what I wrote, well it wasn't meant to belittle his death, as for homage well maybe......
for me, HST is one of the tent-poles.
Someone (actually it was the late great steve goodman) wrote an ultimate country song once, and he had a little checklist of all the things that had to go in it, you know drinkin' cheatin' etc.
I did only that, everything in the letter was a thompson-ism.
Sometimes Jan Wenner (publisher-owner of Rolling Stone) would send him to cover a story and all he would get back was a 20 page letter as to why he didn't cover the event or subject very well, and Jann would publish it, usually because it was hilarious.
I would never belittle anyones life as an afterthought. but it was meant to be funny, because he WAS FUCKING FUNNY! But I wasn't mocking him, I'd call it a homage (H not silent) but not an homage (silent H) cause I hate that word. Tribute! how's that?
And anyway, anyone who has more than a passing interest in his writing got it.
O.K? now I'm going back to the Neil Young thread which IS very amusing.
