It's looking like Apple is getting ready to fall flat on its face. With all the G5 talk around here anything less will not be "way beyond" the rumor sites. A G4 that out clocks the x86s might save them but I don't see that happening either. Prepare for disappointment.

If Apple releases a 1GHz Apollo PowerMac with all the goodies people here have been speculating about, it'll own the last revision despite the (relatively) modest increase in MHz.

The G4s, and especially the AltiVec unit, are starved for data.

But measuring the significance of the upcoming event purely in terms of the spec sheets is probably missing the point. Apple is probably excited because they have the hardware and software in place - or far enough down the pipe - to kick the digital hub concept into overdrive. The iMac will be amazing not because of its CPU, or even because of its LCD screen, but because it will come with everything necessary to be a seamless, full-featured hub for the so-called "digital lifestyle." If the price point is really going up anywhere near $1800, that tells me there's a SuperDrive involved. That by itself takes the iMac to the next level.

The most important thing is that the iMac - and whatever other gadget Apple releases - will not (only) be astonishing in and of itself, but as part of a whole initiative Apple will launch that will allow consumers to easily do what they've never been able to do before (in terms of integration and real-world usability, anyway). This is in line with the strategy they've been following for some time now, but they must have reached a point where things really started to come together. Convergence, if you will.

Think about all the holes there are, currently:

    1) OS X's peerless audio support is currently all dressed up with nowhere to go. Apple seems to have an excellent working relationship with Harmon Kardon.

    2) Audio has iTunes. Video has iMovie and QuickTime. Images have... Image Capture. Which is flaky. And there's no integration with Home Page.

    3) A consumer app (iDVD) requires a pro machine to use.

    4) Apple is pursuing and featuring apps and tasks (real-time video, 3D, scientific apps, servers) that either strain or outstrip the capacities of its current hardware and OS. QTSS is still arcane .

That's off the top of my head. There's almost certainly more.

Oh, and as others have pointed out, Apple's contract with MS is up this year. Where could that go?

Guys, MWSF will still be "beyond" all of these rumor sites. They're not even telling anything new. Think digital photography. iPhoto is only part of what is planned.

Considering Apple is so far behind in specs I don't think so. Macs are "slow" and over priced. Those are bad specs and fixing that is to the point.

Dressed up with no where to go. That's all of OS X.

Apple is losing ground very fast when it comes to scientific apps. They lost Matlab and IDL. RSI was on board for a long long time. Now they are gone.

IMO Apple drops the ball over and over again. OS X is late and slow with few apps and companies dropping support left and right. The G4 speed dump is still hurting Apple to this day. All the MHz myth in the world can't explain that away. The G3 is still used in a desktop?

As i have said before this past year Steve Jobs himself was asked when imacs would get superdrives at one of those finacial conference calls for shareholders and he said not until 2002

I'm guessing he meant late 2002 but either way a superdrive needs a g4 pretty much i think i could be wrong many of you know more than i do

So i think putting a g4 is not unrealistic but i 'm not sure about a g4 flat imac combo going i just dont' think they can pull a good price off for it.

a 733 g4 cost 1699 now right? well if they use 733 g4s its plausible since i now assume the 733 will no longer be in the pro model with those models being bumped up

This is just random unorganized thoguth and i refuse to edit so bare with me and try to decipher my blabbering mouth or hands

G3 is five years old. kill the ****ing chip already!!!

In reference to the digitalhub vs. clock speeds...

Does your average Graphic designer, 3d Animator, Video Editor, Musician, DTP'er, Scientist, Game Player etc etc give a toss whether this stuff connects nicely together (obviously to a point), or do they want stuff that helps them work more profitably, efficiently and productively.

Apple can make a million cool gizmos that connect in a billiion ways, but if they don't address the problem that people can work faster and cheaper on x86, then a bunch of geeky school kids isn't going to save them.

Walk into any of the businesses above. You don't see a bunch of guys and girls sitting around watching iTunes Visuals, downloading MP3 to their iPOD, marvelling over their 14.1" LCD screen, HeLL no their banging their fists on the table waiting for their computers to finish tasks to meet the ever closing deadlines.

Apple needs to seriously choose between having cool home appliances or screaming fast business solutions

    Preferably BOTH

    Right on.

Macs cost too much and OS X and/or G4 is slow so why bother at all?

If you're not doing graphics production then there's no reasons to buy a mac.

    what about ease of use?

Macs are the only damn comps that when u install a driver the damn peripheral actually works and works right, meanwhile a pc is like hmm welcome to Xp u need to upgrade ur drives which don't exist cuase ur crap is to oold and ur modem is not supported becuase u need to download the new driver but u cannot connect to the internet cause u do not have the driver for your modem so u need to download the driver for your modem.....

I know and this is really sad. I am starting to feel that Apple's idea of great and my idea of great are two different things. I want to buy a new PowerMac -but at double the price of a 1700 XP I have a hard time convincing my wife! If the mac was really faster it would be one thing, but I know that it is not. Oh well. It scares me to think that I am slowly moving away from the Mac platform. That really sucks. All Apple has to do is to make competative machines!

I think that those report are to consider as bs as mosr's one this time: a 750Mhz G3 is somewhat unreal (IBM current G3 750Cxe top at 700 Mhz and IBM 750Fx will be 700-800-900-1000 according to IBM press releases); as regards MacWorld predictions on the PowerMac G4, the person they trusted told them that the Apollo G4 will be 7445 or 7455, but moto already said that Apollo will be called the 7460.

We always trusted those sites for their accuracy but this time we must say that even mastergateing was more beleavable!!!!

Why would anyone want a colored iBook. First of all, Apple is pretty much done with colors, at least for now. And second of all, the curent iBook is great looking.
