More like... since the firewire cable goes completely unused by the majority of buyers, it doesn't make sense to include it in the standard bundle.
Since most people don't use the cord, why make every body pay for one. It's ludicrous to proclaim that people should have to buy an extra cord that they'll never use.
There seems to be a rather comically level of exasperation over what is bundled with the iPod.

You think that because Apple includes it, the consumer will pay for it? We KNOW the margins on the iPod (and if you don't, you should before telling me what they can afford) ... a $5 connector that they USED to include isn't too much to ask..
For that amount of money, I'm saying they should at least give you the best product possible. Include BOTH the USB and firewire cables, and charge the same price.
I like the iPod, but the feature that made it the best over the competition (firewire) is now an accessory.
So Apple drops prices by making the customer pay more to make the product usable - that's what you are supporting!
Who uses Firewire? Mac users. Which cable isn't included - the one Mac users use. Get a life - it's not only the principle but the deceit and again, abandoning those who stick with them.
Is that the best you can do?
After this one I'm not going to even read the rest of the thread so apologies if someone else has said the same thing.
So dropping the price by $50-$150 depending on the model makes it onerous to pay $10-$20 for the cable? You still save between $40 and $140 compared to the prices last Monday! Give me a break! Apple make it cheaper for you and you whine calling it more expensive??? Do the math again.
What you end up realizing is that some companies put features into their products, and others have their heads stuck up their "bottom line"
Yeah, it might cost them $1 per unit, but when they're raking in $300 on each, it's not a problem.
You guys are all ranting about how "it's arrogant to proclaim everyone must PAY for blah blah"
The fact is, people WONT pay for added features that they don't need, so companies should ADD more features to fill all the little niche markets along the way.
You know my brand new PC motherboard came with a joystick input.
You don't see anyone complaining that "omg I paid for this BS waaa."
You know why? BECAUSE I DIDN'T PAY FOR THE EXTRA FEATURES!! The company absorbed the cost because they wanted my business.
The next one of you who says "Well I don't want to pay for it" has my permission to stab yourself in the face with a #2 pencil.
If Apple wants my money, they can give me more for my money, especially with all the alternatives out there.

$5 to the user - not a lot.
$5 x est. 4M iPods to be shipped this quarter = $20M to Apple's bottom line.
That starts to look like real money.
Most people still don't want to pay for an unused cable.
For the record, I prefer firewire. But I won't be so arrogant as to proclaim that everybody else must also buy the extra cable.
