I've seen the portal player software in action. Its not a patch on the iPod software. The PPI referenece code can't even cope with a mass storage transaction of greater than 128M. You can't even use a PPI reference design with Panther, Panther started using larger disk transactions (like greater than 128M).
I don't know what you're referring to but Portal Player make software for a number of MP3 players. Apple being one of them. The software is designed specifically for Apple and designed, probably, by Apple. Apple do not slave over the iPod software but the iPod design, features and interface. Think of the iPod facotry as another hardware part of the production line.

Most of what you're saying is spot on, but in respect to your insistance that Apple doesn't make the iPod software, you're dead wrong. I know quite afew people who would be quite hurt but your assertions that their jobs don't exist. I've seen them, there *ARE* lots of Apple people slaving away over iPod software, that includes late into the night and most weekends. You should refrain from commenting on things you know nothing about, stick to things you do know about.
PPI make a reference design for MP3 players, if you've ever used it you'd know its nothing like the iPod implimentation. What I was refering to was what happens if you plug a PPI reference design MP3 playing into a Mac running Pantherr. See how far you get, it falls over pretty quickly.
Also don't look for direct photo import on 3rd Gen iPods anytime soon. The USB device chip they reportedly use is not host capably, unlike the chip used in the iPod photos it seems.

I said it probably wouldn't happen. There is, however, a media reader available and that is the menu people are seeing. Well I'll have to do more research in Portal Player - I was under the impression they made the iPod software.
I must apologise I have been misreading posts about PortalPlayer. I'm sure I heard that they made the software but looking into it they appear to make the chips. I sincerely apologise for being so arrogant. I however, stand by my other statements.
