Hey- just wondering if anyone bothered to pick up Doom 3?

I'd like to give it a try, but I "only" have an iMac G5 and I'm curious to see what the performance is like- I hear it isn't that bad on low settings...

Peace

    I'm also interested in reviews.

I was kinda hoping I could try a demo before buying a copy.

Me three. I'm sure I'll pick this up eventually, I'm just not chompin' at the bit for it. I am very curious as to how it plays on my G5 though.

Hmmm, maybe its time to buy that extra gig of ram I've been lusting after.

I'm playing for the fourth day. My cpu is a dual 2 Ghz g5 with 512 mb and a geforce 5200 fx (i've changed nothing yet).

The game is doing pretty well at minimum settings, althrough there's still some lag when facing many ennemies. I'm disapointed that a stock g5 can not handle the game at medium setting, but even at low it is beautiful, textures are quite ugly from near, but still caracters have an astronishing ammount of polygons.

I really like it, stressing and immersive. And it's faster than many other misoptimized games for panther. With a better video card and a gb of ram that game would totally be fluid and sharp on my machine.

Worth the price, spend your money!

I got mine today, utterly terrifying - good god it's got my nerves jangling.

    I've got it running on a 2x2.5 with 4Gb, a 74gb Raptor 10k and a 6800UL, frame-rate looks fine at 1650x1080, the occasional stutter.

    Must go change underwear

Not a massive fan of the doom games (unreal is better I think)

But the graphics look nice and very smooth

    Dual 2.5 g5 (2.5mb ram GeForce 6800GT)

It tears a little at 1600x1200 with fast panning but below that it seems ok full spec.

Not sure I like the gameplay but hay it's worth the money and it looks very pretty.

Well- I took the plunge today and stopped by CompUSA and picked up Doom 3.

The performance on the iMac G5 isn't too bad actually. I was expecting unplayable, but it manages and is definitely playable.

My only complaint is for some reason the mouse curser is displayed in the middle of the screen and it's a little annoying...

Yeah I have a Wacom Intous 2 tablet and the mouse will move the mouse on the screen but leave another one in the middle. It won't click with that mouse either, I have to plug in my Apple mouse to play the game. Oh and it doesn't support the 1680x1050 resolution of the 20" ASD (and I'm guessing the other ASD's that have wide screen resoultion). So I basically have extra black around the edges of the game. I have a Dual 2.0Ghz G5 running RAID 0 and the ATI Radeon 9600XT in it. So yeah between the mouse and the display issues I don't play it because it's stupid not to support BOTH my issues. Stupid activision. Good thing I have an XBox....

Yeah- I have an Intous 2 hooked to my mac as well and it does the same thing- even if you unplug it it still sticks...

I think your problem isn't the G5s, it's that FX5200. It's not a great gaming card, PC or Mac. A Radeon 9800 or better would make all the difference in the world on your system.

Honestly, I don't think Doom 3 is all that great. I played the demo on PC, and really felt it to be lacking in story and mystery. The game that a lot of my friends seem to love is Half Life 2. The graphics aren't as good as doom3 (though not much different), but everything else about the game makes up for that. Gameplay, story, weapons, all much better. You can actually use the gravity gun to pick up a toilet and clobber someone! It doesn't get much better than that!

okay, my big question... are the final stages a little less impossible than in the original half-life?

also, i wish they had made two half-life 2's. at the end of half-life, you're given a choice, and it would have been interesting to create two "alternate reality" half-life games, depending on the choice gordon freeman makes. sure, it "seems" like one choice is a sure death sentence, but what if they had made the beginning of the next game with gordon being teleported away by some unknown third party to be used against the g-man and his troops.

someday i'll get a quad g5 and go to town on all these games... which at that point, will be old and cheap.

Only 512? Sad to see you're starving your PowerMac.

I need more than that for day to day work, let alone playing the latest game. However, it sounds like you're enjoying the experience even with 512. I wonder how much better it'll run with another GB.

I'm gonna follow your advice though, and go spend my money!

Ohh I was playing the game last night in a drakened room with headphones.

Bloody Hell it cared the S**T out of me

*note: if you do this make sure your dog will not come looking for treats and jump up at your chair

It reminded me of my old Uni days playing marathon on a 6100 powermac.

I have that extra 1GB of RAM to make a total of 1.5GB of RAM in mine and I ran it at Ultra Quality, I must say that those are the best graphics I have ever seen in my life, smokes my XBox big time. It took a couple mins of loading time, about the same as my XBox with the quality turned up so high, but man was it work it. Very little slow down as well. I only had Doom 3 open not even my iChat just so I could dedicate it all to Doom 3. Still dissappointed it doesn't support my 20" ASD resolution of 1600 x 1050. I had to run it at 1024x768

Yeah - the non-wide resolutions are disappointing after playing UT2004.

1600x1050 IS supported, works a treat in fact, you have to hold down the Apple key as you start the application, select that resolution and it's then set.

OK- the game is getting more tense and is starting to scare the shit out of me!

    WAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHHA!

This is one of the first games not published by Nintendo that I've actually liked and am getting addicted to. Well, this and Resident Evil 4.

Games for mac have been buggy for years. I for one will stick to the PC version, in spite of my Mac being faster.

Well- I got a word back from Aspyr- they say it's a DIVX problem. If you have the DIVX codec installed for QT it will do this.

Now- how do I uninstall DIVX?

I uninstalled DIVX (here) and that fixed my double arrows. Now it still leaves one tiny little problem....I can't click with that mouse, the buttons don't work on Doom 3. So what good was getting rid of the double mouse if I can't even use the tablet mouse??
