Surprise: Finally, those with Power Mac G5s (and maybe iMac G5s) are in for a terrific surprise that we can not disclose until April 29 because, for some reason, Apple hasn't.
So, what kind of surprise do you think Tiger is going to offer those G5 owners?
OK, enough of my posting from other websites.

This got lost in one the threads. Any ideas out there? This sounds too good to be true and I don't know what it could even be!

This was mentioned a while back on YML, they said that the super drives in PMg5s and Imacg5s are really dual layer but apple has handycapped them down to single layer, My guess is that tiger will likely enable dual layer superdrive burns from finder and well...any burning app, I look forthis to be made official at NAB

Has ANYONE gotten a dual-layer DVD-R to work?
I didn't think so.

They only support 8.5GB. If you get more than that on a DL disc don't ask for compatibility with DVD players.

I just need extra storage space for backups. DL will be a welcome addition, especially if my iMac G5 has a drive that will snap into a DL burner once Tiger is installed.

No, I know the benefits of DL technology. I'm just asking b/c I don't know ANYONE who has gotten DL disks to work. That's all.

Then that sucks!
If they make the unlock a Tigger only deal, I'll be very disappointed...

Yes the drives in the Rev. B machines are 16X and DL capable and yes they are currently crippled by an Apple proprietary firmware ? but this has nothing to do with Tigger ? if Apple wanted to, they could unlock eveybodies SuperDrive in Panther via a simple firmware update.

but why? that doesn't make any sense. Lots of people are waiting for DL support and not including it seems a bit odd.
Also, I have got a 8.5GB dual-layer drive and I have successfully burned DVDs (for backup).

Argh. I sure wish the new Powerbooks had had dual-layer support with Tiger. That is the one big thing that I wish my Powerbook had. Dual-layer burning.
I've had dual layer burning for six months and I have used it five times. And that includes doing stuff for friends. DVDs are much more cost efficient. Especially considering DVDs only last two years.

sorry, single layer DVDs are more cost effective. DVDs can only be stored a few years as they do not age well. As a backup they aren't very reliable after two years (or is this just CDs?)

Maccrazy:
Aha! SO you have burned using the DL DVD+R disks? That's good to know as you're the first person that I've heard that has been successful in burning DL DVD+R disks.
Thanks.
