Why is it when there are pending updates, there is *always someone who knows someone who works at an Apple store - which has received "shipments" and knows what's going to be released? Why is that?

Every time.
Maybe because Apple ships the hardware out to stores before the announcement, so there is instant availability?
I know some folks at an Apple store nearby, and they won't tell me squat. By their behavior and attitude, they either don't know anything, or know something bad. Hard to say which.

TCG, And why is it they always have under 20 posts> like we are ready to trust their n000b @$$.
Ok guys finally some good news...one of my friends works at an apple store as a mac specialest (told me to say no more because of obviouse reasons) and his store just recieved a shipment of PM boxes over the weekend. First this points to a PM update sometime this week, and second he told me these machines are defiantly not 200mhz updates and that well be in for a suprise. Take this as you will, for all I know he could be yanking my chain, but im still hoping.
looks like he knows something that might have some truth in it
The problem is, the Apple stores rarely if ever have new hardware before it's released...
They rarely have it before it is announced, but they have it for sale on the day of release, ie, first day it is available for sale to the public.
Generally there's a lagtime between announcement and availability (release), but sometimes they're concurrent. It requires them to be a bit sneakier, but they manage it at times.
And when was the last time that happened for desktops? For the release of the last revision of Powermacs, iMacs, and the mini, none of them were available when announced. It's always taken a couple of weeks after announcement for the to show up at the Apple stores, even if they're available for order immediately at the online store. Why would this time be any different?
Just clarifying the terminology you were using. Released != announced. The way you said it, it made it sound like you couldn't go buy it at the Apple Stores when you *could* buy it elsewhere. T'ain't so. The first day you can buy an item, they'll have it. (iPod Shuffle excepted - that one was a strange rollout.)
Well this disgrace of an update is all but confirmed...Amazon has listed 2.0 2.3 and 2.7 PM with the same specs posted by TS. Whats more the 2.7 is listed as $3000, what horseshit apple is trying to pull ive long gived up in trying to guess. Anyone that buys this 2 year old machine for the same price is a fool...Lets go on a boycott...hopefuly they wont sell more than 10k of these pieces of shit and theyll learn something from it.

That'll teach em.
I need to order 12 Towers next week for work and I'm just damn glad I'll be able to get the new ones.
I have to take my hat off to them. I was very skeptical but they nailed again.
Very sad Powermac upgrade. Specially after so long. I will wait again until WWDC and see what's going to happen there. My prediction is PowerBook G5 coming there. So maybe that's what I am going to buy.
What's Steve going to announce to amaze people? It must be a Powerbook G5 IMHO.
Man this is great! We haven't had a old fashined AI bitchfest in a while.
It's time to put on my "counseling hat" and help some people.
Folks don't worry. The Powermacs are ok. What you're missing is the "sizzle" but the steak is still there. There's nothing that these Macs cannot do. Even PCIe stuff can still work in a PCI-X slot in cases.
Remember you can BTO the graphics cards of "your" choice. Apple has to boil things down to the lowest common denom. Not everyone needs a 9800/6800 GPU.
We finally have fast DL DVD Burners. Let's give credit where credit is due. Apple has done well here. RAM is now 512MB standard. You're only 512MB from having a Gig of RAM.
The new Macs are blah...but there's no need for the vitriol and invective. There's not a person on these boards that cannot make great use of the new Powermacs. Not one!

You are right, they are OK, but what make people whining is the fact it took so long for a really small revision. Plus why they did not lower the 30" cinema display prices? plus the machines should be a little cheaper because the lack of substantial upgrade.

I'd say they're pretty fed up with the sales they've lost due to impending updates and rumors.
And people like me who know a bit too much
The folks at my local Apple Store are all aware that I'm not buying
diddly squat till I see the PowerMac updates, so except for a polite
hello, they're not wasting their time with me.
I know all too well what it's like to work on commission, so
I understand their perspective more than most people do.

In all fairness to most of the Apple Store employees,
I'd say they're pretty fed up with the sales they've lost due to impending updates and rumors.

I'm not going to buy one even though I'm in the market. Now its either a used 12" 1.33ghz powerbook or a 15" 1.67ghz powerbook.
Bastards.
