amazing article by charlie white, a video guru comparing the new "Box" dualies and Dual Intel Xeon machines with the new 2.7 PM. The new x86 machines beat the PM in some tests but not others, pretty much a draw. the authors conclusion is with all the advantages of the PM, its industrial design that is so far ahead of the others, it's OS, and it being like 1500 bucks CHEAPER, he gives the Mac and the Cinima Display his highest rating, and recomends it over the PC's!!! Wait till IBM really gets there stuff together and gets us that MP chip. We are not doing that badly people, as a matter a fact, we have the best machines on the planet!
480p is the new "standard" for G4-class Macs. Apple is releasing "high-def" trailers now in 480p, 720p, and for some, 1080p.
catering to the user base of
(480p is 852x480 pixels for 16:9)
480p --> G4s
720p --> iMac g5s, single powermac g5
1080p--> dualie powermac g5s
well, that's the current state of h.264 quicktime7 on da Mac.
not bad mate, not bad at all... now where's that h.264 decoder chip to come with every new mac from MacWorld SF 2006
Edit: In any case, I challenge any other codec out there to deliver the quality you see with the 480p clips on apple's quicktimeHD site, for a data rate of sub-3000kbps including sound ..!!

I'm not buying DVD movies. I'm just using Recordable DVD's as they're the only way to get large files off the Mac.
And they're too damn small these days. Takes too long to transfer/burn as well.

yup, where i'm living right now, it's silly to buy even a dual layer DVD burner and those media are only at 2.4x or 4x at the moment...
i got me a 3.5" usb2/firewire enclosure, and so buying 3.5" drives 100GB+ would be more economical in the long run... and hella fast.
i've got my iPod 4GB for critical 'portability-required' files

awesome. gonna read that now.
prosumer-->pro video market: right where apple wants to be (edit: with it's powermac line)
web design has gone to the dogs (well, PCs,
reality check: do you think he might have been funded by apple/ibm/intel/others or would you generally say he's 'impartial' enough??

edit: IMHO a decent article.
once you factor in Mac OS 10.4.1 (or 10.4.2 for those running mission critical who will wait till Tiger.2) , IMO the Mac's the clear "winner"

hey HDJedi what do you think of "480p" h.264 qt7 clips on apple's qt hd gallery now?
do you think they are using "480p" term a bit too willy-nilly ??
If they add h264 encoding to the capabilities of this card, this could be an affordable option to greatly enhance Mac HD-capabilities.
