OSX 10.5 - when?

Posted:
in macOS edited January 2014
Having just got my new Mac mini with 10.4 this week, it is now time to start planning my next upgrade!

So when is OSX 10.5 out? I'm sure I heard it would at the end of 2006 (ie around Vista launch time). That would be a great time for me to bin the mac mini and buy an Intel mac mini with 10.5 on it.

Also, is it Leopard, or am I making that up? (can't wait until 10.6 Lion. Rarr!)

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is expected to be released late 2006/early 2007.

Well, the rumor mill claims that Apple wants to get Leopard out right before Longhorn (I mean HastaLaVista), so probably never...

Maybe sometime near the intel transition...could be nice (new hardware, new OS), so late 2006 sounds about right.

Late 2006/early 2007 is not speculation. Jobs said it at WWDC.

The Intel translation will begin by mid-2006 as Steve said at WWDC. All versions of OS X have been compiled for Intel processors so I assume any new computer with an Intel processor will ship with a version of 10.4.X compiled for Intel. No reason to wait until 10.5.

One thing I never understood about windows was it's lack of customization in the user accounts. It's either admin or limited. Mac OS X has excelent custimization.

Late 2006. Tagline "Leopard should have been the OS that was to compete with Vista but we couldn´t wait any longer"

Good Question. Apple dosn't want us to know yet, so their at least keeping that a secret. We should start finding out Macworld SanFran '06.

I do not think that Leopard has to compete with Vista. It will already be light years ahead.

If Vista is released when it is "promised" by Microsoft and if Leopard was 6 months late, Apple would still win the battle. Microsoft is a day late and a dollar short to the table. Their software designs are starting to look like they are having to "take" the best of already existing systems to be able to compate.

The biggest problem with Windows is virus and spyware issues. Vista will be nailed immediately upon its release. It will never end.

I am a recent switcher from 16+ years of software development on Windows based PCs. I still have to use Windows for work, but other than that, it is all Mac now.

I suspect it won't be until WWDC next year before we find out anything concrete about Leopard.

Apple are going to have their work cut out for them, though. Whatever you think about Vista, it's still a big advancement for Windows, and it will have that "all-new" feel about it. Apple are going to be battling against the assumption that Leopard is "just another .1 update". That's more of a PR problem than anything else, but it's still something they need to work on.

I'd like to see Apple put some time into the overall fit and finish of the OS as a whole, and fix some of those niggles that leave you with a slightly underwhelming aftertaste. For instance, spring loaded folders in the dock. Come on, it's been three revisions now we've been waiting for that. Also, helper apps (like the iCal alarm helper) that are inside application bundles should be able to change to dock icon of their parent app, even if that app isn't running. That way, the iCal icon could always show the correct date, and maybe even Mail.app could have a helper that tells you when new mails arrive through badging the main Mail dock icon, even when you don't have Mail.app open. All of those Finder niggles that get on people's nerves, get those fixed as well.

And please, please, please try and settle on your apps looks. If you're going to use the new source list and main window style you tried out in Tiger's mail, please migrate other apps to it and support it with some standard widgets so that everyone can easily make apps look like that. (incidentally, I made a photoshop mockup of what iTunes would look like with the Mail.app style... didn't look too bad at all)

    Neil.

Since Tiger sort of ended Apple's transition from the old OpenStep to a modern Mac OS X with the underlying technologies totally revamped or updated, they have much more time to make new features in Leopard.

I vote for a new better designed, more powerful and much more elegant Finder.

I mostly agree, however, the problem is, features are only 1/4 of the OS. Stability, security, and preformace are really the last 3/4. Microsoft is terrtible at that 3/4 right now (and also not so great at features), but if they get that right in vista (who knows, maybe they will), then they've just accomlished something big for windows, while still adding some features. To get someone to switch to Mac from Windows, it has to be worth the hassle of switching.

As far as Mac OS X 10.5 goes, I personaly think:

Huge performance leaps - esp with intel processors

    More Custimization

iChat will start includding some sort of photoshare feature that will integrate with iPhoto

    More automator proccesses

    and then,

No, they didn't. They said that Leopard should be shipping by the end of 2006. Watch the keynote again.
