...The 17" model definitely wouldn't have fit. ...
I travel with my 17" all the time and it fits fine on the tray. I have had other passengers next to me with their smaller laptops and their extra space really didn't make a difference because you can't use the extra room for a mouse or something. Also, because of the extra room at the bottom of the keyboard it makes it perfect for using an external mouse when you have to have two buttons.
I have a 15" powerbook and I carry it to Uni a couple of days every week. I have a "weak" neck so carrying a lot on my sholder gives me a headache. My solution was to get a backpack that has a waist-strap. This keeps most of the weight of my shoulders.
The difference between the 15" and the 17" is 5.6 lbs vs. 6.9 lbs, which isn't a great deal in my opinion.
It also depends on how you transport it to work. If you drive a car there, then any sized laptop is fine, if you walk or ride a bike, less weight might be better.
Another thing that I've discovered is that on the days I bring my laptop I bring little else (mouse, notepad, powersupply, pen/pencil), but on the days that I do I have to bring books, slide notes, etc. so the weigh difference isn't all that much. Some of my books weigh in at over 3 lbs, so two of these = 15" powerbook
Since you're going to work, i assume you carry less books though
you need a really small philips head screwdriver (I think 00 is right). When I bought new RAM for my PB, instead of paying $5 for the screwdriver I bought an eyeglasses repair kit for $1 which had the perfect screwdriver.
Thanks for all the input. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the 15" Refurb Powerbook. I think it's a great deal at the price ($1599). I will probably get an extra 1 GB of ram (from crucial or elsewhere) so I'd have 1.5 total.
I have a Dual Processor 533 Mhz with 1 GB of Ram. How much faster will the Powerbook run applications (like Final Cut Pro, Dreamweaver, etc.) than my desktop? Will it be noticeably different? Thanks!
Related to the 15" or 17". Does anyone have any experience of the sould quality on the two systems. I believe the 15" has an extra speaker under the keyboard, does this improve the sound?
I have read that for some reason the third speaker was removed from the 15" in this latest update....I don't know why though or whether they changed the specs of the other two

yes, I wish I had a link for you, it was in a thread where
someone took one a part, if it wasnt here then it must have been at macnn or think secret, I was surprised too, maybe someone here can confirm soon, I did'nt pursue it further because I had already decided on the 17"
The computer has two internal speakers, one on either side of the keyboard. The computer turns off the audio signals to the speakers when an external device is actively connected to the optical digital audio /headphone out and during power management.
So what do people think? If you would be traveling a lot would the 12" be better? (traveling as in planes) I really like the smaller form, but things like no PCMCIA and the smaller screen res turn me off. I dunno. I think that 1024x768 would be livable while not at home (I have a Dell 2005FPW), but the problem is that I don't *know* that. It's kind of shakey to be putting your money into something that's so uncertain. But I have a 15" TiBook DVI that's over 3 years old. I know that sometimes it is a little big. And the case seems so flimsy when using one hand to hold the laptop.

Oh well. I'm happy.
