Almost all "registered only" features will work within the first 30 days of use, even if you're unregistered.
I used to make plugins for EV, so naturally the first thing I did was read the Nova Bible and crack it open with ResEdit. The Control "P30" is very common: (It means you must be registered or an unregistered user in the first 30 days of use)
So now I can make a plug-in for Nova with graphics that don't suck thanks to the 16bit color.

It's not so much of a bug as it is an inability of the engine. That is, there is a finite number of ships that can be one the screen at once. Matt Burch seemed to have made most features array-based. I really wish I could get a hold of the engine code in order to make AI tweaks and integrate a little bit of dynamic memory in there.

Actually, I believe you are mistaken. This IS a bug. With the Vell-os Javelin, if you launch your three darts, land on a planet, recall the darts, and land again, you get a message asking if you want to "meditate" to regenerate the darts that were lost in battle. If you click yes, you mysteriously get 3 more darts. You can keep doing this until you have 20 little darts behind you.

Oh. I thought you were refering to something else. Namely the fact that if you have enough escorts it's very easy to dominate planets, because there is a max-ships-on-screen constant.
And secondly, there was a similar bug in EV and EVO regarding carrier based fighters. I'm surprised it never was fixed fully, but since I tend to dump my fighter bays ASAP and fill the space with forward firing weapons, I don't tend to notice such things.
Mil credits in thirty minutes is nothing...I've made 6 mil credits in one mission with a Leviathan working for Sigma shipyards...
BTW who else thinks the opening music is freaking AWESOME? Very well suited to the game.
[EDIT: How do I start a mission thread? Making millions for nothing is getting kinda boring....and are there any really good engine upgrades besides the sigma stuff, port n polish, etc. And what the heck is off to the Northwest with those freaky little purple things that kill you in seconds?]

Hunt around likely spaceport bars in order to get missions. That's how you'll get into a mission thread. The Northwest is basically uncolonized. The only thing there are the Krypt pods, which are weird mass-energy-psychic beings. They don't play a major role, though.
im still playing the unregistered version... its has taken over my life. Dammit.
Funny thing is I started as a shuttle, got 'trapped' into not being able to modify anything, but once I boarded a huge cruiser that was disabled after a fight and just for the hell of it (1% chance) tried to take it over... it worked!
I continously plundered disabled ships and in no time had about 2mil.
Im currently a Vell-os Arrow and trying to finish the dang mission but there are no more mission specific missions anymore except carrying stuff around. I picked up every possible 'suspect mo'hai' and brought em all back.. but things arent proceeding. Wtf.
Also of highlight:
I killed el Presidente... sorry about that Andrew I was about to land but then saw that he was there and just had to try n take him down seeing that the hailing call wasnt very nice (shame shame ) He has damn heavy shields but not very much offence power. In the end he onle had 171,000credits... Yeeeesh, what a meager booty. I would've thought who knows what would happen and would find the anser to life and all that. Oh well.
I still haven't found which dang system you are talking about that lets you trade huge amounts within the system... hmmm.
You might have reached as far as you can go with that thread without registering. You cannot complete any major thread unregistered.
That said, I'm glad you're liking EV. If you like the Vell-os thread, which is actually just meant to be an extension of the Barry tutorial, then you're really gonna enjoy the other main threads! Just remember that you'll hve to start a new pilot to follow the other threads because each thread changes the universe in a different way so that the other threads wouldn't make any sense if you could do them afterwards.
*hint* For a fun little bonus, try to have saved up 50 million credits before you finish that thread you're on. */hint*
has anyone here ever charted all the systems with wormholes in them? at this point i swear it's like 1 in 10. kinda cool that they can get you anywhere in the game in no game time at all.
also, do they serve any useful purpose other than travelling without using up time? are there sytems you can get to through them that you can't get to otherwise?
The wormholes connect to each other randomly. You can chart all of them by simply re-entering them repeatedly until you think you've got them all.
There are a couple, though, like the one at S7evyn that will only appear after certain misn bits have been switched. Also, the S7evn wormhole (and maybe others, but I haven't seen them) are one-way trips.
hmmm? So when I register Im going to have to create a new pilot??? Are you kidding me??? I have over 13mil credits that I have bent over backwards to make (plundering those wonderfully fat and juicy Manticore pirate ships especially... at least 300,000 to 500,000 credits each mmmmmmm yummy) and TONS of trading.
Yeah, I got to the end of the Vell-os thread and can only go around trading and killing pirate ships. I foolishly thought I could take over a world in the south, but got my ass royally kicked since I was by myself and cant capture ships nor hire them. Grr.
But I must say that with so many races and different technologies and the such this place is frikken confusing.
BTW, the map that one explores in the unregistered version, is the same as the registered version? Whil its already huge, I thought it was going to be much bigger.
Also, is anyone working on a Star Wars total conversion? The old one EV Override kicked ass.
hmmm? So when I register Im going to have to create a new pilot??? Are you kidding me???

No, no, no. You can keep playing the same pilot. It's just that the missions will not be available until you register. What I meant about making separate pilot files is that once you start a "main" thread, you're locked out of getting to the other threads. Once you've played through one or two, you'll understand that this makes perfect sense. You can't, for example (this is not a spoiler, just a random idea for an example), play through the Rebel main thread and destroy the Polaris and when you're finished start the Polaris main thread... because they were destroyed! You see, each main thread shapes the universe in a different way, thereby nullifying the missions for the other main threads.
Am I making any sense?
[quote]BTW, the map that one explores in the unregistered version, is the same as the registered version? Whil its already huge, I thought it was going to be much bigger.

Well, I too was kinda disappointed at the size. It doesn't get any bigger than what you've probably already seen (with the exception of one or two special systems). The rumor mill made it out to sound a lot bigger than it actually is. Still, it is a fair bit larger than EVO.
I don't know about any total conversions yet, but Im sure people are already working on them. I know there was a lot of discussion about Star Trek ships and how the new engine can actually make things like an Enterprise D with a separating saucer section and a Prometheus that splits into the three sections... mmmm....
Anyway, you can head over to http://www.ev-nova.net/ to check on the status of some of the plug-ins in the works. Certainly not a comprehensive list, nor (do I imagine) will all planned plugs actually be completed. That's just how it goes.
But stay away from that survival guide! It's de debil!
