anyone notice their version of the dock? perhaps i am just behind the curve, but this is the first time i have actually SEEN it in action (well, as much action as you can discern from a static screenshot), and apparently, yes, it wholeheartedly RIPS OFF the scrubbing/enlarging icons fun of the Mac OS X dock (and apparently the dock borders "bulge" slightly outwards when the user is scrubbing the dock).

the thing that truly, truly aggravates me is that i know of at least two people who, when they see this, are going to say "wow, that's really great! windows is really looking good these days! they're really pushing the boundaries of personal computing..." and then make fun of my mac within 3 to 5 sentences. and then i will have to control my Fist of Death.?

They don't have one. They have the taskbar, which looks aside is largely unchanged from that of XP, and they have the sidebar, which is a lot like OS X's dashboard.

Im gonna have to see the vista "sidebar" in action instead screenshots to see if it apes the osx dock... just by looking at it though, I imagine it does...whether or not MS developed it first or if Apple did, or maybe someone else did, the fact remains that Apple executed it first into the OS and MS is clearly being unoriginal and copying it. If they were so "innovative they would ve had it into there OS years ago. Or did other innovative functions as well.

The sidebar is not an application switcher, application launcher, application notification area, storage place for documents and folders and shortcut to the Trash like the Dock is. The sidebar is a place to host widgets, like Dashboard.

wel, it sure LOOKS like the dock... or looks like it's trying to look like the dock.

It's not a rip off of the dock as far as storing applications. But it's essentially a Widget, er Gadget dock (on the side).

The dumbest thing, is that they still don't seem to have solved the problem of making apps easily accesible. Millions of PC users are still going to have their desktop littered with Shortcuts. Can you imagine installing an app on OS X and having a prompt ask you if you'd like to put an alias of the application on your desktop?

dude, i still get a lot of app installers ask me if i would like to put an alias of the app in my dock (which i hate... i like my dock to ONLY show what's running, essentially a process dock). everything else is handled by my dragthing docks.

in XP, they're either on the desktop or buried multiple clicks away in the programs folder of the start menu, or even further if they're further classified. The OSX design of the dock is perfect: handy and stays out of the way.

I don't think I could stand that. How do you open your apps? Navigate to the application folder?

What I said however was not "dock" I said desktop. On windows they litter the desktop with shortcuts.

Edit: oh, you use dragthing. What is that? I generally try to stay away from third party apps if there's an Apple equivalent.

Another Vista feature. Personally I find the most interesting part the section on the second page.

    Quote:

"The operation of the hardware-software environment must evolve to more stability, less volatility in order to allow IT staff/operations/consumers to spend their time creating value for organizations. Our digital world will be predicated on the deft manipulation of information/data, and every minute spent on managing and updating hardware is time stolen from productivity," he said, suggesting that if computers operated like phones or refrigerators or televisions, then users could spend all of their time using the device rather than working on it.

"That's the future I want to see companies like Microsoft striving for. Constant change is only good for the people initiating the changes. For everyone else, it's disruptive, risky and labor intensive. In 2005, people are excited about their equipment if it doesn't crash for a month or two in a row. If only my computer equipment was as reliable as my 3-year-old car," he said.

Bit of a pipe dream given the variables for hardware support in computers but it sure would be nice.

Speaking of the dock. Apple hasn't really changed it since the earliest iterations of OS X.

    Does anyone see this changing?

Personally, I don't like how windows minimize to the same place as applications. Also, I don't use expose much. Something makes me think that some sort of a mix between the two might be useful. Or maybe I'm crazy.

what matters is stability, ease of use, and all the rest of the non cosmetic functions.

    EXACTLY!

I have freind who is part of the vista team he was a Code Warrior/writer for win 98 and he is a mac user and a hardcore mac fan in his private life, and Although i cant get any answers out of him about vista, none at all...

he does say things like "dont even get me started" and things like that lol,he says that me of all people as a Die hard mac fan will be pretty pissed at the blatent stuff they are copying from OSX i guess this is some of the stuff he is talking about.

In his opinion,However, "This is Interesting",Part of the reasons why the release dates for vista keep getting pushed back because they keep trying to find ways to make the copied features look less like obvious clones... thats his straight shooting opinion and i for one beleive him. So take that However. 0.2 cents

I keep the Applications folder in my Dock. I just right click it and up pops a menu (kinda like the Start Menu in windows I guess) that contains all my applications. It's the way I have used it since OS X 10.0.

I used to use a folder with the applications I used most in the Dock. But that's made way for Quicksilver.

hmm, I keep my most used apps in the dock and command click on an application to get to the containing folder of that application (the application folder) and select another application that's not on the dock if I need to.

Of course, that was pre-tiger. I spotlight the application I want now.

hmmm, I wonder if we'll have a "smart" dock in the future. And also a way to put a set amount of icons on the dock and page through them like is currently done on the Dashboard dock.
