The problem is the G4 is low end in the iBook and top end in the Powerbook. Makes no sense at all. It leaves people wondering if the Intel chips really are better than the ones they are replacing. Apple absolutely don´t want that right now
Compatibility issues could be resolved by continuing one version of previous generation of the computer and making it clear that it is an inferiors model compared to the new ones.
If they were to sell G4's and Intels at the same time, I think they would do it in a similar way to what they did after launching the Dual Core/Quad PCIe G5's with a link to the Dual Processor PCI X, and have Intels as the main machines with a link to the old G4 machines alongside them.
