while on the subject of iChat, I've used it once with video. I couldn't get the cool desk view, only a window within a window. is that because my friend was using AIM, and not iChat?

The "desk view" as you call it is when you're multiconferencing (conferencing with 2 or 3 other people.) Straight 1 on 1 A/V chat won't give you the slick desk look.
