ok, I just answered my own question. It's UP TO a total of 3 years, no more. So that would mean 175 bucks a year (15 bucks a month) Is that really worth it?

So... when Apple can't keep up with demand, it's a sign of an inept company.

But... when you still can't find an XBox360 in a store 4-5 months later, it's called "Brilliant Marketing".

when in say 2.5 years time your mac 'goes a bit funny in the head'* and you HAVENT spent the money on apple care you will be faced with a large repair bill or the large cost of a new computer. fair enough you might get the newest and latest and greatest computer.

    BUT

if you pay the apple care (and as said you have almost a year to save for it) and 2.5 years down the line you NEED your mac repaired. BOOM. you get it sorted, you MAY even end up with a brand new machine... depending on the fault and how big it is.

    is that worth it?

    up to you

but ALL insurance is money you spend in the hope that you never need it!

The problem is that portables are far more likely to have a problem than do desktops.

I tell everyone who buys one, no matter what brand it is, to get the extra warrantee.

People don't realise just how much abuse a portable actually gets.

Actually, I just found out I can get Apple care for $240 I should enjoy this student discount thing while it lasts.

The other thing is that I already pay for Safeware Insurance, which has been VERY good to me so far. But that only covers accidental damage.

Applecare doesn't cover accidental damage does it?

I don't think they do. I see a line that says it doesn't cover damage due to accident, abuse neglect, misuse, unauthorized modifications and a lot of other things.

What DO Applecare actually cover? Is it a plain extension of the usual warranty or is there more in it?

Are there any consumer electronics warranties out there that cover user inflicted damage?

Seems like a pretty dumb thing for a company to cover under a warranty

It is dumb, I haven't heard of any stock warranty offering that. Sony does supposedly offer accident protection as an extra cost coverage, at least for the camcorders.

Yah, I didn't think they did. That's why I have safeware, cause my computer is much more likely to be damaged by my own clumsiness than anything else. It only costs me 60ish dollars a year for 1100ish dollars of coverage with NO deductible.

The first time I used that insurance, I had dropped my iPod in the toilet, so they replaced it for me. (300 bucks right there) Then, my iPod dropped and was damaged, but then they turned around on me and told me that my policy didn't cover my iPod just my laptop, and that the first time they replaced it for me it was a mistake. Then my computer gave out on me (cause of a drop) and they repaired it. (500ish bucks there). And then my computer broke on me again a few weeks ago (drink spill, so they tell me), but it wasn't worth the cost to fix it ($780 for an iBook G4 800). So they gave me a cash settlement of 650 dollars. So now I've put that towards a new MBP!!

The point being. I've gotten over a thousand dollars of repairs done on my computer by safeware, but I've never had any need far a warranty.

The only companies that normally do this are the cell companies. For $4 a month, they will replace your phone no matter what happened to it, including loss. But that's an expensive warrantee plan.
