Three sold, maybe a fourth for the wife.

However, I think 10" is still too big. Back a while we had a discussion where someone suggested it should be the size of a DVD case. This would make it small enugh to carry at all times and large enough to be useable... the keyboard could fold out to full-size. The perfect note-taker and presenter.

I can get down with that. I would order the day it came out.

Don't companies who make subnotebooks typically charge premiums for them? What would you people who want to buy three or four ( ) say if they cost $1999, in-line with the low-end MBP? (Assume an ULV processor, and 11" screen or smaller.)

Also, isn't running an OS too intensive (e.g., it'll kill it) for an iPod-size drive?

UMPC with a 10'' screen is TOO BIG

sometimes the current UMPC's with 7'' still feels a little too big.

I think we need something that can be carried around in pockets (well.. big pockets). The sony one with 4.5'' is a bit too small.. but i do dig the 5" screen of the OQO 01+...

the upcoming release of ORIGAMI has soom nice designs but still lack computing power (and it uses WINDO$E)...

I think i'll wait another year before I decide to purchase any ultra portable pc's.. It's still too early.

on another note.. i read somewhere that intel is working with apple on an ultra portable.. can't find the site anymore though

why doesn't safari have a search history feature!?!?!!! arghhghgh

Safari barely has a History. It's a decade behind every other browser. Safari was okay for a beta...and it just never...got developed at all after .8. Oh wait, never-mind, they added Tabs and RSS.

Apple is going to release it. They placed themselves perfectly for it. Get rid of the 12" pro computer, increase the size of the the 12" consumer computer, get ready for the 10".

A convertible would be too full of problem. Lacking a keyboard is bad for the pro crowd. Sure the keyboardless tablet is good to checking stocks, reading stuff, and showing pictures to friends but it isn't practical to pull out, log into a server, run some commands, and logout.

The people that carry a laptop with them everywhere are the people that need this. I don't think we should think of it as the UMPC that we have seen so far, I think it going to be something brand new.

Has anyone seen the acer tablet where the keyboard sort of slides out for the bottom? That is a start. I think apple will amaze the world. It will cost at least 2000 and lots of people will pay. The people that buy tablets and umpc's aren't worried about a few hundred dollars. They think about how much hassle it would save them to have a laptop only take up half the bottom of their briefcase instead of the whole thing.

I will buy one whenever it comes out. My prediction would be optical drive, 10", cellular modem, bluetooth, wifi, touch screen. EDGE is global, but EvDO is so much better. I think it depends on the market they want to tap into. The key would be to sell both, customize it when you buy it. I have had both, edge was good, evdo was awesome.

However, the US EV-DO carriers (Sprint, Verizon, Alltel) don't want Apple knocking on their door. They've spent too much money developing their crap $2.50/song Doesn'tPlayForSure WMA music services and will partner with Apple when hell freezes over.

On the other hand, Cingular (who runs on EDGE) has several iTunes phones (the most recent being the RAZR V3i) and is rumored to be working with Apple, Motorola, and others on over-the-air iTMS downloads to launch later this year. Don't forget that Steve was quoted as saying that Cingular is "...a great partner to work with". Such a service (iTunes Mobile, perhaps?) would be a good reason for me to dump Verizon and switch to Cingular.

As for T-Mobile USA... I could see them being an Apple partner, but not until they have the bandwidth.

*If* Apple goes down the cell carrier route I would expect a SIM free unlocked device - it's just easier.

You don't understand how the US/Canadian cell phone markets work... it's way different from Europe, where you can buy unlocked SIM-free phones everywhere.

In North America, the carriers always sell locked SIM/hardwired phones. You have to sign a 1 or 2 year agreement to get your locked phone, but then, they chop off a lot of money off your initial phone price and make the rest up in expensive service agreements. Partially, this anti-consumer gouging is due to the fact that the US carriers couldn't agree on one common digital technology like the European carriers did in the early 1990s.

In other words, Apple will have to appease the US carriers, too.

Actually that's exactly how it is here. Carriers cut as much as 75% off handsets if you go for a contract, but you can still buy unlocked direct from Nokia et al if you want an untainted version.

I think an unlocked UMPC could do well world-wide, though I'd prefer an Apple smartphone.

That is a good point about sprint, verizon, etc. I think that it would be EDGE anyway, just because it is a global technology. I use a bluetooth phone as an EvDo modem though, so I will still have that.

That's why I'm saying that apple won't release the UMPC we are thinking of, like the ones shown in your photos.

    I agree.

Apple seems to be trying to scale the iPod up (slowly). One baby step at a time. Good strategy.

Much of that could be solved by Apple. Mac OS X is much better suited to pen input whereas Windows is hard work with a mouse! Battery life is a harder matter, but fuel cells are getting close.

Hey all, this is a subject i have been interested in for a long time.

but i think its time to think outside the box.

as i see it, the points everyone keeps bringing up surround how to deal with a full size OS and a less than full size screen... what if you could have a pocket size device..like just a foldable,or not, keyboard, integrated with the guts of the computer. basically , the size of the smallest keyboard one would feel comfortable typing on with a small track button nib or whatever - with NO screen. thats right, none. havent people seen the new glasses just introduced like a week ago that basically are the equivalent of looking at like a 20 inch screen? why not just plug this into your keyboard/computer and do everything looking through these? imagine being on a plane, subway, train..whatever. nobody next to you can see what you are typing/looking at. you have the ultimate in portability and you dont have the battery drain of a full backlit screen. it would be a definite paradigm shift but one i would be willing to deal with. i guess you could make it so you could power and external monitor if needed too so when back at the office or home you can work without the glasses.

Those glasses have very low-res screens, often 320x240, so running an OS would be tricky.

    Cool idea though.
