I understand that it is a possibility that a new MBP could come out at WWDC here in a few weeks. Is it really worth the wait to see if a new MBP comes out? What exactly is the benefit of the new Merom processor, I know it will be faster, but will it increase battery life?

I think the MacBookPro will be refreshed in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter to prepare for Christmas sales. The July-Aug-Sep quarter looks good with MacBook overflow in July-Aug (it's selling very well) and Mac Pro propping up the September quarter.

The MacBookPro updated will probably come out Oct or Nov. It should sport Merom, but unlikely that the graphics card will be updated. The X1600 Mobility is as much as Apple can put in the laptop in terms of heat and battery life, unless ATI comes up with an X1650 or X1700 Mobility, or Apple switches to nVidia GeForce Go 7800 (quite unlikely). Merom will offer increased performance at similar battery life in all likelyhood.

So any updated MacBookPro later this year will be nice, but if you like the MacBookPro and need one within the next few weeks, go for it.

yeah I think I'll definitely wait and see what comes out. If a new MBP doesn't come out then I'll probably get a MB, which hopefully I can get in time for college because of the increased wait time. Can't wait!

Yes overall, unless you intend to play a lot of games on your MacBookPro, the MacBook 2ghz, with DVD-burning ability, 1GB ram, portability for taking to college lectures and the library, etc. will be nice. Running WindowsXP2Pro if you need to as well.

Then get an XBOX360 or PS2 for your gaming needs if you want.

The MacBook will be sexy and attract interest from the opposite sex too Whereas the MacBookPro may look too serious and professional.

Yeah, that definitely looks good. I'm sure that's what I'll end up getting, but I've waited quite a while, since I don't need one till school starts in late late August, so I can wait a few more weeks. Thanks for the information, it's pretty useful since I'm a switcher...or plan to be.

Here is the essential college set up, and why you need it:

First off, you need a laptop. End of story. You could probably play some of the decent video games on it, and if you cant...well then play the PS2 that you should already have. But everyone in your dorm will play Halo instead...or they'll actually go out and engage in physical activity (heaven forbid). If the dining hall at your school is Buffett style, then you def. shouldn't get a desktop because you'll get REALLY FAT.

Not only will you need your laptop in class for notes, recording the lectures, and sending IMs during boring ass classes, but you want it to be small...hence the MacBook. The pro is bigger, but you're probably not going to make a feature-length film, are you? And even if you did...just get 1gb ram.

Now, you've decided on the 2mhz macbook, but what about color. Although black costs $150 more, its just plain sexier. And it will look esp. sexy with a black ipod nano next to it. And in class, girls will be like "wow, thats hot...I think i'll send him a facebook message" although class is NOT the place to pick up chicks, and neither is facebook (i've tried both). In any case, $150 is worth it, because this will last you years, and you want to be sexy dont you?

Another reason why you should get the macbook over the macbook pro: the macbook pro costs like $300 more. This price difference saves you enough money to get another back-to-school necessity: a North Face jacket. Thats right. The Denali fleece is most popular, but for function you need the Neputse down jacket, also black. Just imagine yourself sitting on a park bench writing your paper for Black World Studies on your black MacBook, jamming out to the black album played on your black nano while wearing a really sweet black coat...too bad all the cords are white.

    Excellent post...

I'd recomment the MBP, but then I'm biased since I have one (I'm starting @ college this year also. Then again, I DO plan on video editing and already use it for PS/Flash at work, so I can justify the extra cost.

My only (semi-valid) reason is that that it's revision A and has integrated graphics...other than that...go for it.

Laptops are overrated for universities, if you use a laptop in lectures etc, the only time you'll actually write, you know, with something called a pen, will be at exam time and by then you would have probably forgotten how to actually do it. Don't become a real lazy ass and get a laptop, get an iMac, least you'll be able to use your fingers for more than just typing, write that on your CV.

Interesting observation for something with a powerbook. Oh yeah, I totally disagree with everything you said.

You need a laptop. If someone can only have one computer, it should be a laptop regardless of age. The only exception is someone that wants to do intense graphics or video work -- but most of the time those people have a desktop and a laptop.

Because you can't take an iMac with you to write down lecture notes. Duh. Are you guys at university? I am, and a laptop is not a requirement, it is a luxury, a choice, not an essential thing.

Yes, along with 45,000 other student who have laptops. I actually think most of the colleges (College of Business, College of Law, etc.) require a laptop.

Heh. When I was in College/Uni 1996-1998 I did a mixture of using a laptop to type notes (I was the only one in all my classes) and notepads. When I dislocated my shoulder one too many times and went for shoulder surgery, I still took notes, I had to keep my right hand (I am right-handed) stiff, and move with my left hand the writing pad. Not fun.

Dude, you are in uni/ college. From what I hear about kids this days (and *uhm* certain websites) you should be using your fingers for a lot more than just writing or typing Hit the gym and get that testosterone going....!

Don't let the wild times pass you by! Nah, no pressure, just have fun while doing well at skool. I didn't even kiss a girl at all until my final year of my degree.

no dude, you need to have sex for sure. If that means getting married, then do it. And, no matter WHAT a stripper tells you, there is no sex for dudes with desktops.

I'm telling you, you'll wish you had a laptop. Even if you dont take it to class, you can sit on your futon and have a beer while you IM people about how not to get busted by the RA.

Oh yeah, don't forget the North Face jacket...the most important part of the ensemble.

And don't join a fraternity unless you want to swim in feces.

LMAO, sorry I thought it was a dig, must be the heat...

By all means yes go wild, keep away from the class A drug stuff though, even if it doesn't bugger you up mentally and/or physically, friends of mine have done stupid things with severe social repercussions...

And fraternities are crap imo, but do what you want, just for the record I have a Powerbook and while yes I do love the convenience, it isn't essential, so if you want to play games etc but don't have the cash for a MacBook Pro, go with an iMac. But be warned, you may be doomed to a life of celibacy...

A lot of your work will require solid processing, so the stronger the processor the better, but I will suggest that you invest in MS Office Academic as your core software package for college. You will be taking some humanities courses, surely, and MS Word is essential there; your handling of spreadsheets and such will be greatly assisted by Excel, while (perish the thought) PowerPoint is standard across many campuses.
