Survey: iPods more popular than beer
A new bit about "in" things on college campuses came up with a nice one for Apple: the iPod is more popular than beer. We didn't have iPods back in my day, or I might not have had as many hangovers as I did!

Wonder if the legal drinking age has anything to do with it

The results are from a new biannual market research study by Student Monitor, which found that nearly three quarters, or 73 percent, of 1,200 students surveyed said iPods were "in" -- more than any other item in a list that also included text messaging, bar hopping and downloading music.
In the year-ago study, only 59 percent of students named the iPod as "in," putting the gadget well below alcohol-related activities, according to the report. This year, drinking beer and Facebook.com were tied for second most popular.
The only other time beer was temporarily dethroned in the 18 years of the survey was in 1997 -- by the Internet, Eric Weil, a managing partner at Student Monitor, told the Associated Press.

Also, lots of folks arent beer drinkers for either religious/moral reasons, like prior addiction or church doctrine; or just because they do not like the flavor of beer, and the survey was of students, a large number of which are under age and shouldnt talk about whatever drinking they may do (and certinly not to a reporter/polster) Many people in one of those groups may and probably do have and/or like iPods.
Sortof a stupid survey

I still go out several times a week, but if I didn't have my iPod I don't think my health would permit me to do so.
With luck the trend shows that US college kids are becoming serious, using the iPods for in-class presentations, listening to lectures, etc, etc.
NOT!

Done.
Honestly, I think people have grown accustomed to certain things. Ask college students a few hundred years ago what the IN thing is, and they might say electricity and running water are the in thing... extreme I know. But look at the article. It says the only other time Beer was de-throned was in 97 for the Internet.
I think the internet has become like running water to most people, a high-speed always on internet connection is like a basic human right these days, especially in college.
If the survey said something along the lines of: "What could you not live without in college" I think the internet would be number one, soon followed by beer and iPods.

Did they compare the ipod to swill like Budwiser? or something from the rich tapestry of micro-brews?

Bud? That's about the best I've ever had on a college campus. After four years I've consumed more busch and natty light than I care to think about.
Checking out this company's website it looks like Beer was only one option and that "other liquors" etc were also on the list. And yes, A large number of those surveyed are underage, but I don't know anyone who does not drink in college because it is illegal (although, yes it is true that some will not drink for other various reasons). I'm not sure what your last statement is suppose to mean. Even if they don't drink, all student's options would be considered in the results regardless. Also is a survey of what is perceived as "in" by students, not necessarily what students do or what they own.

Why not? Most people in college are mature enough to drink and have to do so illegally because of a minority group that ruins it for the majority.
Many people in one of those groups may and probably do have and/or like iPods.
You have a very good point. However, from my perspective as a student at a high-tier school where not many people drink, I would not conclude that a higher percentage of people who don't drink beer have ipods than people who do drink beer. The iPods are stacked high at our parties. If anything, the underage-beer-drinking-ipod-owners are at least equivalent in size to the no-drinker-owners at my school and probably the majority at bigger party schools.
Thus, there's gotta be a good number of people who chose iPod > beer. I would have.
Sortof a stupid survey
Yeah.

I am almost certain that most college students are interested in beer for the intoxicating effects, not the taste.

Come on AI - this is not news for heavens sake. Were have all the juicy rumours about new products gone?
With CNN reporting it, it's hard to single out AppleInsider.

true, but the point of my statement is that telling a reporter that you drink may not be something that a lot of under age college kids are willing to do...
And I dont know about you but screwing with polsters when they call is FUN..."My political party; socialist, I voted for Nader in 2000, but changed to Bush in 04 because he will stop the ter'ists" say that to a polster and I garontee they will freak out and hang up...
Shiner Bock and iPod ... can't be any worse than Nike+iPod
EDIT: Better yet ... combine all three. Running, beer and the iPod ... Shiner+Nike+iPod ... the new college craze. You heard it here first!
