iMac... Gateway style

So, what happens when the windows world takes on the iMac's unique design... this simply has to be seen to be believed

first this from the website

"Simplify your workspace with a space-saving, all-in-one system with uncompromised desktop performance and features. Its unique design is streamlined, simple and clutter-free, and you can purchase the Gateway Profile 6 All-In-One for about the same price of a desktop and LCD display." (or iMac)

and

"The innovative design of the Gateway Profile 6 houses the display and the computer components in one efficient package. Its compact size makes it a great choice for any small space, from cramped offices to crowded hospitals and classrooms, even kiosk stations. Compared to a traditional desktop and LCD combination, our unique all-in-one uses a cable management system to make your work area less cluttered."

Sounds promising, right...

lets see as we explore the Gateway Profile 6

I laughed out loud when i saw it

oh wow... a tower attached to an LCD screen... holy crap, I can't believe they are actually proud of this, and think it is "streamlined" etc. OMG, LOL, ROFLCOPTER... most rediculous thing ever perhaps... geez, I am having a hard time getting over that.

Upon viewing that abomination, I nearly threw-up on my iMac. I had to quickly give myself an antidote of 2 parts Leopard rumors, 1 part porn.

    Wow. That's truly sad.

One could almost excuse an abomination like that if it were a budget-priced machine, meant to be sold in bulk to customers needing the convenience of an all-in-one unit at a budget price. But it's only $100 less than a 17" iMac, and a spec comparison between the two doesn't help the case for the Gateway much at all.

At a quick glance, the only things I see "better" about the Gateway: 3.0 GHz CPU vs. 1.83 GHz, 800 MHz system bus vs. 667 MHz. Since the iMac has a Core Duo, much of the raw GHz difference is probably a wash next to the Gateway's single-core Pentium 4. The iMac's DDR2 RAM is also faster than the Gateway's RAM (667 vs 533) , so it can take better advantage of the available bus speed.

I'll let the difference between getting OS X and XP Home edition stand as a separate issue for the reader to decide. Besides the iMac's physical form looking 47 times better, however, for $100 more the iMac has:
    • A better display (1440x900 wide screen vs. 1280x1024).

    • ATI Radeon X1600 vs. integrated graphics.

    • Built-in iSight.

    • Remote control and Front Row.

    • A bigger hard drive (160GB vs. 80 GB).

    • SuperDrive vs. Combo drive (can't write DVDs with the Gateway, only read them).

    • iLife (As far as I can see, even setting aside issues of software quality, I don't see any bundled software at all listed for the Gateway -- if it's there, they don't seem eager to call attention to it.)

I have to say it again.... wow. There no gentle way to put this, the Gateway is complete crap by comparison.

Yep, not to mention I think it's safe to say the 3Ghz P4 would get beaten by an 1.83Ghz Core Duo in most things, and obviously in multithreaded applications.

Very poor effort by Gateway. Never thought I'd say an iMac was a bargain compared to similar priced windows boxes!

It looks like they mounted the LCD with double sided tape.

That is, without a doubt, one of the ugliest pieces of crap I've ever seen.

You want an abomination, you should see the older Profiles, they have been trying to rip off the iMac since ~1999, and I have some old PC Mag issues in the closet, if anyone is interested and I get time and a server, I could scan and share...

Update: forget the scans...I will lookup the models in Google images and provice links...

Profile 1(iirc)(circa 1999, not too bad for 1999 hardware, but it has been down hill since)

Profile 2 (the poor lamp iMac was in a head on colision!)

Profile 3 (direct from the farm!)

Profile 4 (not 'too' bad, but I wouldnt be caught dead buying one!)

Profile 5 (10 paces back for every step forward in logical design)

And as we all know, the 6 is no let down in the trend of a more disgusting, stupid design with each rev.
