Meanwhile, sources say that a new enclosure is waiting for the MacBook Pro and will be released when that system adopts Intel's mobile Core 2 Duo processor. The desktop Core 2 Duo, code-named Conroe, is slated for release later this month, but the mobile variety, code-named Merom, is not expected until the Fall. Accordingly, new MacBook Pro systems are not expected at WWDC, although a bump at the high-end to the recently announced 2.33GHz Core Duo processor is possible.
Well it's from Thinksecret, so for what it's worth these days.

Especially since Merom is slated for release in August, it makes little sense to delay releasing a Merom product until the fall. I wouldn't be surprised to see a complete "Pro" machine revamp at WWDC, with the new MP immediate release and a new MBP (for pre-order).

August has 31 days. WWDC ends 20 days before the end of August. that's almost 3 weeks left to introduce a processor.
i may be moving to Georgia (Q4), bit confused to whether to get an iMac or MacBook Pro, may need the new Mac by Sep end ... was holding off this purchase for almost two months
... since WWDC nearing, wait for another month...
any chance new MacBook pro shipping in mid Sep with merom? (Rev A problems in my mind as well)
iMac 20" - 10Kg - not mind carrying that machine -not sure US customs procedure - (is there any duty?)
i am doing development in the dark side
Some programming stuff (vs.net) and Oracle database installation are the requirement in the windows (with boot camp)
I think a merom MBP will ship by mid September at the latest (at least I'm hoping that will happen). A good test would be to see how long it takes for the iMac to get upgraded to Conroe after its release at the end of the month.
Well, my friend bought one of the 17 inch G5 iMacs and he lugs it from his town to mine whenever we need to do some work. All he does is moan and complain about how heavy it is. Unfortunately for him at the time there was no Powerbook successor worthy of the G5. I'm going for a Merom Macbook Pro in August.
Don't kid yourself about the MacBook ? indeed it gets hot like its Pro brothers.
Yeah, I hope no one is surprised by this. Both computers use a lot of the same heat generating parts. The biggest differences for heat is the size of the computer (smaller surface area) and the difference in graphics chip.

What can Apple do to improve the heat 'problems' without making the thing thicker?
I wonder if there might be more sophisticated software coming out to control the power used by these new intel chips which, after all are supposed to be v. intelligent power wise.
possible settings...
(1) 'don't fry my balls' perfect for on you lap/in transit - works fine but perhaps stay away from heavy duty programming - plus battery life is way up..
(2) 'Burn in Hell' - recommended use only in air-conditioned rooms and away from flamables. Ideal for Mac work in extremis.
What about the Sony type IG/Pro graphics switch solution - to bring down the heat/up the battery life?

I hope there are more control options. As it is, I am set to just sell my MBP, maybe in a couple weeks and using my old notebook instead, which doesn't get half as uncomfortable.
I don't care so much about the thickness of the unit, bringing it to its current thickness has also meant losing a good variety of optical drive options too. If Apple wants a thin notebook, they should at least be offering the "L" series, or better yet, the "U" series chips, as a BTO option, so it is comfortably usable by humans. Those chips offer better battery life too.
While I don't think the current models have health, burn or reproductive consequences, it is very uncomfortable to use, even when used on a desk.
A lot of people expect that things MUST change in the tech world. That things WILL change in the tech world. Over the past 10 years, home electronics have evolved so much. Many of these technologies' evolution is almost entirely complete -- that is -- until a signifficantly new technology appears in the consumer market to replace the old one.
This is seen for example through:
VHS >> DVD >> HD/BLU-RAY DVD. Each of those started with fast advancements and eventually slowed so that all products are almost identical.
or
TAPE >> CD >> MP3
Besides the point, the design of technology is even more stable than technology itself. The PowerMac/MacBook saw many swift changes from release to release throughout its history, but now the current MacBook Pro design (and extremly similar PowerBook design), just works -- very well. Thus, it will be very rare that we will see new designs, and if we do, they will probably not nessesarily be better, but just for the sake of change.
I think a merom MBP will ship by mid September at the latest (at least I'm hoping that will happen). A good test would be to see how long it takes for the iMac to get upgraded to Conroe after its release at the end of the month.
I am wondering...what benefits (if any) would there be in the iMac going to Conroe vs. Merom? It seems that for the form factor, the iMac, Mini, and he laptops wouldstay Merom-based instead of moving to Conroe.
Wouldn't Conroe be for a bigger enclosure like the Mac Pro? Just curious.

I think it has been mentioned, but I think it bears repeating, Conroe is quite a bit cheaper than Merom. I don't think the iMac would have a problem with Conroe, the same enclosure handled the G5 FX chips very well.
What the Mac Pro will get is unknown, maybe the low end will be Conroe, but the high end and maybe the middle model almost must get Woodcrest chips to retain credibility as a workstation system, and to get a true successor to the G5 Quad.
The MBP case is the major reason I set my sights on a MB. The MBP keyboard feels so unneccessarily narrow because of the big speakers (or are they vents?) on either side. I also didn't like the feel of the keys nearly as much, and something about the MB just seems more solidly built, more unified, plastic or no. I'd like a MBP with a MB style keyboard (but bigger!), and a smaller screen version.
It's hard to imagine how the MBP casing would change.... aside from an nifty anodized black metal high-end model, and the magnetic latch from the MacBook.
There's an Apple patent floating around here for a much wider trackpad extending the length of the machine, ostensibly for touch-sensitive, two-hand manipulation of onscreen windows and objects... but I can't quite see it as a mainstream feature (not to mention the where-do-my-palms-go-now? problem).
Iridescent casing was being discussed as a possible casing material at some point a few years ago... but that just seems unprofessional and cheesy.
The other unfulfilled rumor is a completely customizable keyboard with OLED displays behind each key... (a la the Optimus), but they're still in development and presumably quite expensive and we don't seem quite there just yet.
In the end... my guess is black model, magnetic latch, and minor tweaks.

Since every media company and their brother will be watching the event, maybe intel could use it to announce a new chip or the shipping of a currently in-the-pipeline chip...lets just hope the Intel CEOs suit is an Armoni (or hell even a Sears) and not a bunny this time

About one thing he was right though (the bastard):
Back in 2004 he said that Apple was going to use Intel processors.
(or would be doomed)
His timeframe was death wrong, though.
a discussion about this topic can be found here and here

Keep saying one thing and one day, you'll be right, even when you have no clue.
