    Two other cool new things.

    1. Visualizations now play full screen on a TiBook (instead of having black bars on the left and right)

    2. The help files have been completely rewritten so that they're actually useful. It actually answered some questions that I had never been able to find answers to (like the difference between joint and normal stereo). And it has a layout more like Help in OS 9, where there are actually laid out topics, as opposed to forcing you to ask questions. Hopefully it's a sign of better documentation all around in Jaguar.

I rediscovered iTunes after downloading version 3 and have one question: Is there any way to have iTunes music come out through external speakers, but have system sounds come only through the internal speakers? I like to turn up the music sometimes, but loud bings, bongs and sosumis scare the shiznit out of me.

    Any help appreciated!

    Escher:

You can set the volume of system sounds independently from the master volume in the System Prefs. Use the "alerts" slider to turn down your bong.

You may want to see a doctor about that.

Yeah, but it still has some problems when it is importing from a scratched CD. It finds one small scratch and I have to entirely reboot

Now the iTunes prefs say that my CD-RW drive built into my Cube is unsupported(it just says "No supported CD burner found"). I haven't tested it though, as I am out of CD's.

I sure like it more so far. I DO agree that it does not warrant a whole new version number, but at the same time, Apple did not make a huge HUGE deal out of it... Either way, I am very glad I can finally have my songs named with the track number.. Something I always felt was missing.

The version numbering has little to do with current features. I'm sure future updates (AAC and the rendevous (sp?) networking) will be only .1 updates. the reason it's itunes 3 instead of itunes 2.5 has to do with the notion of itunes becoming OSX only. were it 2.5, people would expect an OS9 version. The version jump to 3 makes it more pronounced and leaves little wiggle room for people to complain about lack of an OS9 version. iTunes 3 continues the move to OSX only...

If you use a USB sound source, you can set that up. It's in the sound pref-pane... pick where normal sound comes out, and ditto for system sound.

Do Smart Playlists work with the iPod? They won't on my iBook, 10.1.4 and latest iPod firmware. Plus iTunes 3 ALWAYS crashes when a CD is in the drive. Of course DVD Player does the same. So did iTunes 2, usually. I got my iBook and went straight to 10.1.3, then 10.1.4/security update. Plain vanilla system. This irks me. My Crash log is getting huge ever since I turned it on (a friend crashed OS X a while ago! )

So does iTunes/DVD Player crash on anyone else's computer at start-up? And are Smart Playlists supposed to work with the iPod?

Can someone enlighten me as to how the hell I can sort playlists in iTunes? Soundjam had an option called "copy to play order" which is not iTunes, in fact that feature alone kept me using SoundJam for the longest time... It was a TOTAL PAIN to rip my cds and make playlists for my iPod, especially since I could not just drag the ripped cds in and have them in proper play order - it all had to be done manually! grr...

See now if only they would add a plug-in to FastTrack and then we could all download our MP3s...

In regards to the smart playlists, isn't there going to be a new iPod firmware upgrade soon? Like when the new 10 and 20 gig models ship? If so, I'm sure they'll support smart playlists. (and hopefully let you rate songs via the iPod aswell).

I'm not 100% sure what you mean but if you just want to play every song on a CD in the standard order then you can sort by track number in iTunes (I don't own an iPod so I can't comment on that).

Smarts Playlist works kinda on the iPod (v1.1). the current playlists + smart playlists in iTunes 3 are all imported to the iPod during updating. But the iPod only can read Smart Playlists, not update them itself. But in the next version of the ipod software (v1.2 download in a few weeks), it will be able to make full use of it, updating the list even when you use your iPod, then syncing the information once it is connected to the mac.

In the browse library window, I am able to get it to browse by genre, artist, album and then the songs. Anyone know how to get it to browse by genre, composer, and album?
