You reply with no argument, pull a figure out of thin air, then proclaim it to be correct. Asus has Mobility X1600s in their laptops clocked at 470Mhz/470Mhz and it is not overclocked. Look here, here, and here

As I said, get it right. Jeez.
That's the MacBook Pro. I already said the MacBook Pro is clocked lower. The iMac is not.
Mactheripper (basically the only [free] way to rip encrypted DVDs on a mac) works great but just decrypts the video_ts and saves it... after that you're on your own.
If it's too big for a single layer DVD-R, you have to BUY software to make it smaller. DVD2One is what I use.
Try MacTheRipper with Toast 7. Toast 7 has Popcorn included, and it will take MacTheRipper output and burn it to a DVD, recompressing if needed. I've done about 20 movies and it has yet to fail.
You can skip the recompressing step by buying a dual layer burnrer. $35 for a Pioneer drive at newegg.com.
I'm not sure Macs need anything else, because the setup I outlined works so well. If you need toast, private mail me for a link to a good discount price (unbeatable, totally legit but next to nothing, limited supplies so I don't want it public).
Sorry mattyj but you're wrong. This has been hashed out before on these boards and I got torn a new one for saying the mobile was underclocked. It's not. In fact ATI refuses to even post a stock speed because mobile gpu's are MEANT to have varying speeds.
I don't know what the iMac's speeds are compared to the mbp... but I find it likely that apple kept them the same just for the reason to expect the same results. Apple has been shading in the past with GPUs. I recall this same thing happening with the 9600xt and the 9800xt that shipped in the rev b g5s.
Either way, there is NO stock speed for an ATI x1600 mobile. It is manufacturer specific. And if you go to the VERY bottom of the link I sent you.... you will see.......

You seem to be mistaking no stock speed for no maximum rated speed. Other companies as said earlier are not factory overclocking their MR X1600s, they are simply running them at their highest rated speed. Apple is running them lower than their highest rated speed. the MR X1600 has no problem running at 470/470, simple as that. If the memory was supposed to be as low as 350Mhz, they would use cheaper DDR2 RAM, not DDR3. Why is this so hard for Apple fanboys to accept?
The MBP runs 300/300, the iMac from 300/300 to 400/400, other laptops run it at 470/470 and it's fine, because it is rated for that speed.
But that was precisely my point They clock the GPU higher (much like "overclocking" would), but not dangerously so (quite unlike overclocking).
Wait, if you're talking about GPUs, ATI has a variable speed on them... in some machines, the driver malfunctioned and they melted the fans (the R9800 comes to mind)..
That's ATI's doing though, not ASUS.. The cards melted no matter which vendor made them.
Well yes they have variable speed, but the maximum speed for the Asus laptops amongst others is 470Mhz for both the memory and core. The point being Apple's MBP cannot control the heat of the extra 170Mhz in core and memory speeds, so they are clocked down. The same goes for the iMac, though due to the iMacs larger size, it shouldn't be a problem. However, having the LCD panel so close to the motherboard may be a contributing factor.
The official specs from ATI rate the desktop x1600 Pro at 500 clock, 780 memory. Seriously, do you ever considering anything beyond Apple's doing it, so it must be perfect?
I have a Dell desktop that is loud as hell. It is plenty fast for most of what I do, but the only resource-intensive task I currently do is ripping DVDs, converting them to h264, and streaming them wirelessly to an XBox running XBMC. I have a functional knowledge of how to do this with Windows and although it's pissing me off currently (only works half the time), I hate the very long encoding time.
With the introduction of Conroe I am almost convinced that this is a sufficient leap in processor speed to justify ditching a P4 3ghz system for an upgrade.
So if you can provide a reasonably quiet and affordable Conroe/Woodcrest machine capable of performing my tasks at a significantly faster rate than I am currently used to I will buy a new computer from you.

We are all familiar with Dell's capability at overclocking speeds, particularly in their laptops. But if you actually want to use one or see them in action, you have to wear a fire-retardant suit. Sorry, but I'm not really interested in that.
I don't want to deal with any of those things, so I just got a PMG5.
Dear Apple, ..snip.. So if you can provide a reasonably quiet and affordable Conroe/Woodcrest machine capable of performing my tasks at a significantly faster rate than I am currently used to I will buy a new computer from you. love & kisses - groverat
So groverat,
2x Dual Core Woodcrests 2.66GHz
1 GB RAM DDR2 (?)
Nvidia Geforce 7300GT w/256 MB
250GB HD (3 additional drive bays available)
16x SuperDrive (1 additional optical bay available)
dammit. apple did it to me again. i was ALL READY to plunk down for a quad-g5. seriously, the new machines couldn't be so much better that i consider foregoing my "never buy rev. A" mantra, right? right?
damn. even rosetta apps should run f'n fast on these (i'm looking at you, photoshop)

Ripping on a mac is a pain in the ass.

iMacs suck, they're no replacement for a real desktop.
I love my iMac
I agree though, they are no replacement for a real desktop. Fortunately, I don't need a real desktop

For the regular, not for the mobility.

This needs to addressed to Mr. Dell.
However, it is great for a lot of us.

The problem I have with the iMac is that it's an unportable portable.
Yeah, pretty much. Apple is great with the really high end professionals or the casual users. It's us in the middle they don't have a clue about.
