Does everyone here use Photoshop?

Coming from the PC world, very few PC users I know user Photoshop. Most use the different hodgepodge of photo editing programs that's available for Windows or whatever that came with their camera, scanner, etc.



Here in the Mac world, it seems everyone uses Photoshop! Wouldn't it be a bit feature-rich for everyday use if you are not in the graphics biz? And where do you guys get it from as I do not want to pay the $$$ for it and don't feel right pirating it? What are other low cost or free alternatives to PS?

Photoshop Elements for $99 is coming out for X in a few weeks.



But yes, Photoshop has got to be the most pirated software in Macdom.

Perhaps something like the Corel version of Photoshop or perhaps Photoshop elements (????) may be an option but I think the best option would be Graphic Converter its a very good application and allows you to edit and save in what ever format you wish!

I've been a Mac user since 1986, and I've never owned Photoshop. It is true, however, that a lot more Mac users than PC users depend on it, because of the Mac presence in the graphics profession.

I use it at work for at a photography studio...also at home for average work because it so useful. I have to say even if you are just making cd labels its the best!

Photoshop is awesome, indeed. I still have to upgrade to the OS X version, though.



I know that some major discounts are available through education pricing. Try checking that out if you are eligible or know someone who is...

Just got Photoshop 7. Has anybody tried Deneba Canvas 8? I don't think Photoshop is really what I'm looking for to do my stuff and I have no experience with it. Maybe I should get Illustrator or Canvas.

Adobe seems to have implemented a near-floolproof anti-piracy scheme with version 7.



All serials have to be checked with a central server. Skipping it is not an option. Apparently, it is impossible to find a serial out there that will work.



I think this will have a major impact on the number of Mac users who run Photoshop.



And no, I do not run Photoshop. Though I always wanted to create the kind of Photoshops you see at SomethingAwful.



I hope someday I'll get 70 billion dollars and be able to use it.

Yeah, every person I know that has a Mac has a pirated version of Photoshop, even if they don't use it at all. I actually have a copy on my computer because I backed up someone elses computer while they did a reformat, and they had a copy on their drive. Gives me two errors when I start it saying something is missing, reinstall, blah, blah. But it works anyway. I usually just use Graphic Converter though.

Give it time you will see a crack out I am sure. Although I have yet to get a PS7 for OSX to work on my computer and I have tried many times, I just gave up I figure if I really want it I will just go buy it.

Don't worry about me, I've just always known about the rampant piracy of Photoshop and was surprised to hear that Adobe might actually be able to curtail it after so many years.



"The warezd copy of Photoshop" has become somewhat of a comic cliche in the Mac community.

Photoshop is the industry standard. Others have tried to compete with it, but have failed. Anyone here remembers LivePicture or xRes??



I can't even think of any other program that can compete with it today. Maybe Macromedia Fireworks if you're doing only web graphics.



So for what it does I think it's very reasonably priced. Version 6 sucked, used 5.5 until 7 came out and it rocks.

Actually, there's a new kid on the block and it's called PhotoRetouch. It does colourcorrection/modification and retouchework better than Photoshop, and easier too. Mind you, it's not cheap, but in this case you really get what you pay for.

Good link. What's your experience with it so far?

It's a totally amazing program. I use it full time (instead of PS) to do colour correction and stuff. Much easier and more powerful than PS I think. It does some unbelievably complex stuff relatively easy. Took me about a day or two to get used to the interface, and now wouldn't wanna be without it. Totally stable, ok speed (PS is slightly faster though) and simply the best tool to get the most out of your scans. I'd say, check it out and download the demo. You won't be disappointed if you delve into the very powerful options - please note, this is not a consumer program!!!!
