You got to take the buzzz up a notch: I prescribe a dash of 6 shots of Jaegermeister within a 5-minute period, and you'll believe the Zune will beat the iPod in sales next month... and that this iPhone stuff is true... and that AppleInsider is actually run by an alien from the future.

Why? Just about every CDMA phone in the UK can revert to GSM automatically when there is no CDMA network available. (The GSM network had about 98% of the UK covered before CDMA came along).

i don't understand you overseas people, back in europe GSM is huge. Just because all providers use the same system (General Standard for Mobile) there is a lot of competition on contracts, so you pay less when you phone/SMS. SMS is all over the place.

I don't understand people nagging 'bout locked phones, in Holland there's a whole industry unlocking every phone (easy enough with the right software). In Belgium it's even illegal to sell a phone which is locked with one provider.

Don't be a slave to cell phone providers, buy the phone of your choice. And let's all hope Apple comes out with GSM/SMS/GPRS/3G compatible IPhone.

BTW Sony Ericsson is proving right now flash based MP3 player/phone with good battery life is possible.

Just give me ITunes compatibility and i'll buy one!

I'm hoping to see no keyboard on this it's hardly Apple's style. Surely using OS X/Newton's Ink technology is more likely.

One thing for sure is that we are all going to be disappointed with the specs. I really don't believe Apple can walk in to the market day one and match the features packed in to a SonyEricsson.

Are you talking about GPRS? That's not the same thing as CDMA in America.

Apple is a software company and this phone will have an amazing OS/user experience.

Well, the above aren't hardware companies either. Well, not as far as making phones anyways.

apple doesnt have to conquer the mobile phone market, right away or at all. They are doing just fine and will survive without an iphone.

further more i'm sure they will release a GOOD product right from the start to fight the uphill battle. Unlike the zune, which is a "five year war" or a lousy excuse to enter the market with a pos. you want to sell product? make it good. and apple gets that

Apple won't have to control the mobile phone industry, I just hope they provide a good replacement for the seemingly dead Palm OS. Windows Mobile kind of isn't an option and I'm not sure I like the idea of Symbian

If they don't announce/release an iPhone by August though.... I'll be getting a Sony E. like I should've done in the first place.

Funny that you think having a phone with you all the time *frees" you from a tether, when in fact it is a far more insidious leash. (I won't be buying an iPhone, by the way, because I'm not seduced by the marketing message that I need the world to be permanently in touch with me.)

So, they found the Kim family... but now Kevin Rose is missing...

*BREAKING NEWS*: The dismembered body of Kevin Rose found scattered around the country randomly scattered in with newly shipping iPod shuffles. More at 11:00, after My Name Is Earl.

Well let me put it to you this way. As a healthcare provider, I could carry a cell phone and if a patient, nurse or someone else needed to reach me then no problem. Otherwise I could stay at home and sit by the phone. Not a hard decision for me.

You know you could always get voicemail and let it take messages when you wish for privacy. Most people complaining about cell phones don't use them correctly IMO.

Are you operating your cell phone in the hospital? They always warn you to turn them off before entering the hospital. Don't tell me it's all an urban myth.

No. That's the point. With a cell phone you can leave the hospital.

The iPhone may not match all the tons of features packed into the SonyE, but the iPhone can certainly do well on the *most important* of those features, iTunes integration, iPod-like interface and snazzy new phone interface. Steve Jobs has probably bought like the latest 15 models of SE, 15 models of Nokia, 20 models of Moto (who so miserably failed in their "iTunes enabled" rubbish phones) and said to his peoples, "We can do this better, not everything at once, but we sure can do this better...!".

Thanks for your thoughts ShanMugam, and we finally know what city you're in now. Oregon - no sales tax. You lucky bastard. 8)

Nah, I've mentioned previously, I'm boycotting myself from doing the MWSF countdown. Too much noise in the signal, so to speak.

No and I know. Code Division Multiple Access is used by 3G networks.

2G phones are GSM and an improvement to these some years ago was to add GPRS capabilities which is nominally known as 2.5G. Now in parallel we have 3G phones that use CDMA technology.

If you are on the 3 (Three) network in the UK, as a relatively new player to the mobile market, they had the problem that on day one as the first 3G provider they couldn't roll out the coverage that the big 4 had on their 2G networks. Obviously if they sold a 3G only phone then consumers would be aghast at the poor coverage. To counter this phone had to be able to revert to GSM use when a CDMA network was not available. In this case 3(Three) worked out a deal with O2 to use O2's GSM/GPRS network. Back in May 06 3(Three) made another deal with Orange to do the same.

So the vast majority of UK 3G phones can also use 2G networks so it's pap to say "I don't think Apple could make a GSM and CDMA phone in one".
