Sorry to hear about such hassle in trying to boot your Mac, but as I said before, I suspect a more deep problem (hardware/firmware). If it was a software problem, you could just boot from the system CD, wipe clean the hard drive and install a fresh copy of Mac OS 9.
I had many years ago a similar case with a G3 Powerbook. It could boot fine in OS X 10.1 but not in OS 9. No way, no matter what you tried. Some time after it was completely dead and if I remember correctly, the problem was the PMU. Replacing that brought the machine back to life again.
Thanks PB i would suspect a hard ware fault but i have 3 machines and thay r all the same ????..when i got them secondhand yesterday they were all up and running in Tiger ...but i need them to run os9 ....and not 1 will boot os9 no way atall ...can it be due to the fact that they have had firmwhere updates so that they can run Tiger ??

Although I cannot answer that particular question, I have read in the past several firmware-related horror stories. So, in principle it can be this in some way, but I cannot help you there. Sorry.
If the iMac G3 is booting into OS X then it has the lastest firmware which was installed under OS 9.2.*
What you need to do is try this install Classic with OS X if you don't already have it. Goto system preferences/startup disk and see if the OS 9 system is showing in there. If it is select it and restart it should force OS 9 to startup unless there is some problem.
Lets know if it shows up and what happens if you try to select it as the boot system.
I have had this happens a couple of time with iMac G3's I look after for other people with some on OS ( and some with OS X & OS 9.
Don't know if this will work, but figure worth suggesting:
-- Boot one of the Indigos as a firewire slave to your Macbook. Now it's just a harddrive.
-- Low-level format the Indigo drive.
-- Mount OS 9 CD on Macbook, and install OS 9 on Indigo via Macbook.
-- When you reboot the Indigo after this, hold down option+cmd+P+R to zap the PRAM.
Again, don't know if it will work, as this won't affect any firmware issues. But mounting Indigo as slave drive may avert startup issues you're having.

That was my first thort ...i pluged firewire lead into my macbook and into one indigo ...and it dont showup on my desktop as a disk?...dont supose you can tell me how you use a mac as a slave with firewire could you

First, I doubt this will work as Classic/OS9 was never ported to intel so the OS9 installer will not run on the Macbook.
Second, to boot any firewire mac as a disk hold down the 'T' key on the keyboard during boot.
Third, it would help those of us trying to help you to know if Classic was running on the Indigo under Tiger.

No clasic dont run ...when i put in the install disk for os9.2.1 into the indigo ..and try to install it trys running classic then says something about calnt find a os9 folder ...so i coppyed across a os9 sytem folder to the tigers hard drive ...then select that folder as start up disk ...and it bombs on start up ...so then i have to reinstall the lot again ...hope that makes sence ...how do i installe an os9 folder into tiger for clasic to run ??

Have you tried
1) put the OS9.2.1 CD into the Indigo
2) after the CD appears on the desktop open up System Preference, go to the 'Startup Disk' pane
3) I believe the CD should appear as an option in the Startup Disk pane
4) choose the CD and reboot
If this work is should then go to the install.
Otherwise you'll have to find a 10.3 install disk(s) and install the classic environment from there. Tiger (10.4) did not include classic on the install disks).

You're right, it should work, and it did work on a 450 DV Imac that I had. This would indicate either hardware problem (but I understand it doesn't work on three systems so unlikely) or the CD you have is bad. I would look for another system CD. Did you get multiple ones with the three indigoes?

Yup i got 3 and an og 9 disk ..whats got me also is that i took a drive OUT of a 333imac runing 9 fitted that into 1 of the indigos and it still dont see the sytem folder hold down ctrl on start up it dont see the hard disk ...but put in an osx disk hold down ctrl and it sees that disk no prob..then instal it and it sees the hard disk to installe to ....WEIRED or what ??....i think it may be down to the firm where updates that r needed to run tiger on a 500mhz imac ...but not shure what they do ?
What i have planed next is ...Firewire the macks up to my macbook ....i beleve i hold the T Key down on start up (is that on the imac or the macbook)...then try booting from the sytem disks .i am going to erase all 3 imac disks ...then i going to try booting from a norton cd ...if that dont work i am lost ..

Am I correct in assuming that when you say 'ctrl' you mean 'C' key. To boot from CD on a Mac you hold the 'C' key.
Also, you might try holding the 'option' key during the boot. It should show both the OS 9 CD and the OS X HD and let you choose which to boot from.
Right sused it i think ...i need to down grade the firmware back to the og 500mhz slot lading imac ...does any one know haw to do this ....yer calnt run classic cos yer calnt instale os9 cos yer calnt boot from disk itsa tester this one ...come on Mac lads show your genius
You cannot downgrade the firmware that was never possible to the best of my knowledge. The firmware that would be on the iMac 500 would be 4.19 which was needed also under 9.2.2 to be able to run OSX 10.2 and above.
I have a OS 9.2.2 system which will boot your imac without any problems.
Now do you use ichat or some other app as I could help another way outside the forum.
If you use ichat click on my name and it will give my ichar addie I am on there now and will help get this sorted asap for you.
I have no idea why this happens but do have a way around it.
Howdy folks. Just checking on the status of this thread. I am currently doing some research. It sounds like a bad hardware issue, but try Zapping PRAM 4 times on Startup.
Hold down Option-Apple-P-R on startup and continue to hold them down until you hear the startup beep 4 times. Usually that clears up any problems. Try that and get back to us.
The reason you probably can't boot into OS9 is because the drive was formatted without the OS9 disk drivers installed. This doesn't effect classic booting but kills normal boot up.
If zapping the PRAM and them trying to boot from the OS9 disk holding down C doesn't work it generally means that your CD is duff. Try booting with the 10.4 CD and then open disk util and re format the drive but with the OS9 disk drivers checked on. The install normally and install classic. Then you should be able to select OS9 from the startup panel and boot in to it. This way you can get around and duff boot disk.
I had a similar problem with an old B&W G3. Works fine now I only needed OS9 to upgrade the firmware.
