Ok, we've got some great things for you developers over the next few months but I want to talk about the iphone...
*sound of guns being cocked*
No that wouldn't happen. If Apple announced a SDK for the iPhone (which I think they will) Developers would be ecstatic. Another platform in which to re-purpose your application is nothing to sneez at. The iPhone runs OS X but will be platform agnostic in its ability to syncronize data. That's a bonanza opportunity for those developers working on productivity applications.
betting the whole farm on the freakin iphone! even the most patient mac fanactics will be p.o.'d by this (incl. me). and i assume this means ilife and iwork will have to wait too, right?!
by advice to everybody: get a copy of the new ubuntu linux coming out in 10 days or so. you will be surprised how far linux has come, almost (of course not quite), a replacement for osx but DEFINITELY a replacement for most windows users....
I don't care about the damn iPhone! I am a Mac user and have been longing for Leopard. I am not going to pay $500 to get a stupid phone with a 2-year contract! It's just a toy for kids! But Leopard would be the real thing, for adults! Now, you sacrifice it for a phone, you...
I am so frustrated at the moment. xxxxxxx iPhone!!!
I feel your pain. Remember though, Apple Inc. is no longer Apple Computer, Inc. In my opinion this is just the start of the Mac taking a back seat to "other" interests. Just as the Apple II platform kept the cash coming in until the Macintosh got its feet on the ground, the Mac will now help pay the bills until Apple completes its transition to become the next Sony, a consumer electronics company. I'm really surprised that more people don't see the writing on the wall. From Job's own mouth came the prediction, "The computer wars are over. Microsoft won." Except for OS X the Mac is essentially a Windows OEM PC now. Once Apple is finished transforming itself the only thing left will be to drop OS X and the Mac becomes a high end PC like the Sony Vaio, one of many products produced by consumer electronics giant Apple, Inc.

I use OS X, WinXP, Vista, and Kubuntu on a daly basis. While I am impressed with how far Linux has come, it is nowhere as simple to use and as intuitive as OS X.
Given that Apple were in the situation they were, I'm glad that they made this choice. I'd rather a 4 - 5 month delay than a buggy as hell initial release.
Does this mean we will actually see 10.4.10? 10.4.11?

I am sure I must have missed something major, but for 99% of users 99% of the time, what exactly is the must-have, do-or-die, if-Apple-does-not-release-this-I'll-commit-harakiri feature that 10.5 will offer that 10.4.9 does not? (Yeah yeah, I am already aware of the cool and supposedly sexy stuff like Time Machine and Core Animation).
It could be wonderful buying opportunity tomorrow!

I hope not. 10.4.9 is fine. Put those developers on Leopard. Let's get this party started. Right! Let's gets this party started. Quickly!
I have been using macs for years since the SE and apples in general since the Apple II. I use them in my practice and have developed patient management software on them. I have been waiting for months for Leopard to be released to replace at least 5 macs but now I am very disturbed by this delay in introducing Leopard. I think that Apple will lose it's way if it doesn't consider itself as still a computer company. Yes, it has done very well w/ other things (we have probably 10 or 12 ipods in our three person family) but would not even consider them if we didn't use Macs. I have been responsilbe for the purchase of Macs by many of my business associates, friends and patients but this I think could be a disaster. I certainly have to question whether I want to wait until Oct to purchase more Macs. The Modbook I have on order may be my last Mac purchase as I can use Filemaker on any Intel machine.

Thinking about Ubuntu myself. For me Tiger really isn't a "problem" OS yet. Leopard has a lot of stuff going on underneath the hood but Apple will have to bring more "flash" to get the eyes of the consumer. Until then we all can tinker with Linux in Parallels/Fusion/Bootcamp or whatever.
June will be a fun month. The iPhone ships or at least we know of ALL the features and and we'll know about what the full Leopard is going to give us. The hard part is really waiting for the Top Secret stuff. Once we know what we're getting we can decide if its worth waiting for or whatever.
I, for one, am also glad to hear that Apple chose delaying Leopard for stability's sake. Tiger is an awsome OS. I am VERY anxious to see Leopard, but Tiger is working very well for me.
Maybe... Steve will be cracking the whip the next two months, by June Apple will miraculously be ahead of schedule, and Apple will announce an earlier ship date at WWDC. Four months sounds like a long delay to project on the front end, but I'm sure they wanted to give me markets something more definite than "it ain't ready yet."
What does this mean for iLife? Skip a year and bring out iLife '08 with Leopard in October? (Suits me.)
Will we get a Apple TV/HD/Beatles event in May? At WWDC?
First it was not ready for Mac World, then they did not announced any Macs at Mac World, where people payed good money to be one of the first to see and buy the new Macs. The big hoopla been the phone and the apple tv, neither of them a true mac, no matter how exciting they are. There was also no iLife and no iWorks at MacWorld, This is a very strange year guys, not sure what's up with Apple.
Apple releases the hardware when it's available and sometimes even before! Notice the 3ghz, 8 processors Mac has a processor from Intel that no-one else has been able to get yet!
Buying a new Mac today, or buying one at the end of June (when you thought Leopard was coming) won't make a damn bit of difference. There's a 3 month delay in the OS release. I'm sorry but I work in Final Cut Pro, Photoshop and Illustrator all day with 4 Mac Pro towers. I just ordered the new 8 core one... Nothing I do is going to make Leopard not run on it.
Apple releases hardware now BASED ON THE AVALIBILITY FROM INTEL. If you want to know when a hardware update is coming, SIMPLY take a look at what processors are coming out when/for what from Intel (the roadmap). That's when the next update will be.

I need a new Mac - one which is powerful enough to let me shoot RAW photos, since my current one won't. I don't want to buy a new mac when there is a big software update just around the corner for several reasons;
1. It is nice to now that your software is still being developed - ie if I have 10.5, I will benefit from the added options Apple in in 10.5.1, 10.5.2 etc.
2. It is nice to have new, shiny software, particularly since I'll be keeping the mac on which it comes installed for several years.
3. I don't want to buy a mac and then have to shell out £129 for extra software I'd like.
4. As a donationware developer, it is handy to have the latest OS release so I can see what my software looks like for my users.
Because of all of this, I think it is a sensible decisions to wait until 10.5 is out for me to buy my new hardware. I think I am therefore entitled to be a little disappointed Webmail, since I have to wait another 4 months before I can get a new computer and shoot RAW, so to call users like me 'idiots' for planning hardware purchases around OS releases is a little short sighted.

Between the Intel transition and OS X we have been spoiled by Apple when it comes to fast and constant releases and upgrades. I don't think 2 years is that long to wait between OSes.
Releasing the iPhone first is without question the most important thing for Apple to do. The time between the iPhone's release and Leopard's release will garnish more switchers than those waiting for Leopard to simply come out. How many of the complainers are going to jump to Vista now that there is delay? Ha! Thought so.

More PC uses own iPods than Mac users so we are the anomaly here.
There is something about this post that is simply incongruent. You have articulated "nothing" that supports leaving the Mac platform other than Filemaker Pro runs on any Intel machine. Imagine what your associates, friends and patients will think of you when you have openly proselytized the Macintosh to them and then you turn around and buy a PC. It won't be Apple's reputation that takes a beating here it will be yours.
Well, get on with the hardware updates already then Apple. The Mac mini has turned into an antique, we need HDCP support on the displays, better graphics hardware in general, etc. Obviously, there is no point in holding this stuff off for Leopard now.
Hehe, half that stuff may not work without Leopard, I hope I am wrong, but why have all that been delayed if it was not for Leopard features?

Of course the Leopard team was working on it!
1. iPhone runs Leopard
2. iPhone has a samsung CPU, which required porting a NEW OS to another NEW CPU
3. Leopard team had to port to Intel, and switch architectures
This has EVERYTHING TO DO WITH LEOPARD, NOT THE ACTUAL iPhone hardware.
