I'd prefer 8-bit displays with the fast refresh time. I've heard that 8-bit displays use more power but I don't care about battery life as I can just plug it in. Maybe Apple should think about using 8-bit displays (if they can get ones with fast refresh times) and come up with a solution to use them in a power saving mode?

I really need a new computer (using a single processor g4 at 450MHz) and sold some stock a while back so I am ready to buy. I have to admit, I'm concerned about the 6-bit vs 8-bit but also want a screen with a fast refresh rate. If I had to choose one option over the other, I'd choose the 6-bit with the fast refresh rate as you can still get millions of colors with dithering.

I am not very knowledgeable on the 6 vs 8 bit screens, but it seems to me that they could supply the MBPs with 8 bit and then you could use a color option to turn it down to 6 bit for battery life and performance and stuff. Is this possible?

I'm also in the market for a new MBP, since I'm going to college this year, and I'm going to be going into video production, emphasizing in editing. Because of this, I'd lean towards the 6-bit dithering option, since I want the guarantee it'll never dip below where I'd need it for video, especially when I start getting into editing with HD footage.

I don't know if this is possible or not... I'm not too familiar with displays themselves, but this is an interesting thought. I'd probably like this option better if it's possible, so when I'm doing basic editing processes and things, I could use it in 6-bit, but when doing more advanced things like color correction, and such, I could flip it to 8-bit and have the more true colors being shown.

Well I don't have an answer, but I can not figure out what is wrong with using a 6 bit screen? AFAIK My old 17" Studio Display is 6 bit and it looks great to me.
