Then he did his "One Last Thing" gig ... of course that was about the iPhone.
WTF?!
The fact that Apple dropped the "Computers" from its name means something, I am afraid. If you still are not convinced, then you are welcome to check out the new www.apple.com site look. The Mac now is a product category weighing equally as the other ones in the top link bar. This is what fits better the company strategy.
Like it or not (personally I don't), this is the new Apple. Ooops, let me correct it, dis is teh newa Appel ZOMG!!11!!eleven!!one!one1two2!!!
So, keep smiling, this is not the end of the world.
Did anyone else notice that in the keynote, when he introduced the new desktop, everyone burst out laughing? He looked pissed at that point. Did they think it was a joke in that they were trying to copy Vista?
At first I assumed "TFTFF" = "They Fixed The $#^%ing Finder"
But could it be more like = "They $#^%ed The $#^%ing Finder"???
Or... "They $#^%ed The $#^%ing Filesystem"... by not switching to ZFS???
WWDC = World Wide Disappointment Conference
What the $#^% is the story with ZFS? I mean HFS is what... 20 years old now? WTF is Apple thinking?! HFS is a pain in the --- , especially when it comes to sharing files with other platforms.
WTF?! I just watched the keynote stream... Steve Jobs did his "One More Thing" gig and could just feel the crowd expecting him to announce ZFS in Leopard. No, instead it's all about Safari on Windows. Then he did his "One Last Thing" gig ... of course that was about the iPhone.
WTF?!
Did Steve ever say, "NO ZFS!" (no)
give it a rest. release is in october for a reason.

erm, not really. the audience seemed to laugh a bit, not sure why though. steve didnt really seem to change.

My take was that when Steve said "new desktop" and showed a slide of a desktop it was as if he were touting a new desktop image as a "feature" and the audience thought he was making a little joke.

aaah right i get where you're coming from now. yes i do see what you mean. they sort of mock that this counts as a feature.

Well I took it a slightly different way...
FTFF has been a running joke at almost every mac-centric forum and IIRC Steve might have even made a slight reference to it (was it at the last WWDC?) - he didn't come out with FTFF but it was implied...
Anyway... I think that's what the developers were thinking in their heads when Steve brought up the finders deficiencies and how they were being addressed.
And that's why you heard the undercurrent of giggles....

I didn't catch that. Was he alluding to Finder unhappiness just before he introduced "the new desktop"?

icfireball... whatever it was that Steve Jobs demoed yesterday at WWDC was called by Apple "feature complete". Are you saying they might still add features to a "feature complete" build?

Actually, it's: "Apple Unveils Near Final Mac OS X Leopard"
But anyways, ZFS is not a feature. It would go under the "Technologies" category.
And why would Apple give 4 months cusion to a release if there were not changes to be added.
Plus, Apple only discussed 10 features of the over 300..
it's a bit ironic that the current iTunes 7 was a literal preview of the new Leopard Finder and it was right in front of us us all this time. personally i like the stacks and new previewing features in the Finder (actually i was really hoping for something like this) it will certainly help in creative design workflows.
cover flow is very much like rifling through a filing cabinet...
Apple develops these details well in advance Think of it this way: Apple introduces Cover Flow in iTunes and the iPhone, and then introduces it in the Finder to do what? My guess is to prepare us for a new Multi-Touch interface on displays/tablets/etc. which would be perfect for flipping through files and content.
erm, not really. the audience seemed to laugh a bit, not sure why though. steve didnt really seem to change.
Yeah I watched it again and it wasn't as bad as I thought. I found the laughter odd so it stuck in my mind. You're right, it didn't seem to affect Steve.

Judging by other people's reaction here, I'd say that was quite likely. That's what I thought when I first saw it and I still kind of do. I don't want to say it but I now like Vista's desktop over Leopard's. I still prefer Leopard's windows and buttons (with graphite on) but Apple's ability to come up with great designs is wearing thin. No new hardware designs for years, the iMac chin, brushed metal interfaces and now this. People are going to surpass them quite quickly at this rate.

Judging by the events leading up to now, they'd have to do something like that or people are just going to lose interest in the events. After that keynote, I'm not holding my breath for anything spectacular. I mean c'mon after every event when they give us absolute crap, people come along and say well next time, they'll have fireworks and kick-ass products and dancing girls. I think the reality is going to have to set in sooner or later.
Even if they do finally deliver us some great product updates and Leopard is as great as everyone is hoping, it will have been nearly a whole year with bugger all. I hope they never do that again.

I honestly think Apple is thinking about the next platform, one that will change the game the way the original Mac did.
But we all know that computers will probably eventually fit in the palm of our hand and use flash drives but that is a long way off. Right now we need steady progress in developing desktop technology so that we can get our work done. Those developments should never take second place to experimental future-thinking and here it clearly has.
With such a limited developer kit, the iphone won't be changing many people's minds about the future of computing.

Just say cocoa finder and you'll feel better

Not quite sure (he might have) but with the crowd sitting in that audience he didn't really have to... It was well known to all in attendance.

Now, whether or not they actually have the chops to pull it off is another matter, but I don't think they're resting on their laurels.

Agreed.
